Do You Have a Passion for Animals and Their Care? Dundee Township Park District is looking for enthusiastic and hardworking individuals to join our team as Equine Handlers and Attendants. If you enjoy working hands-on with animals, maintaining their habitats, and engaging with the public, this is the perfect opportunity for you!
What You’ll Do
As an Equine Handler and Attendant, you’ll:
- Perform daily husbandry tasks for equines, including feeding, diet preparation, cleaning, medicating, and training.
- Maintain a clean, safe, and welcoming environment within the pony ride attraction throughout the day.
- Safely operate the pony ride wheel with up to six (6) ponies at a time.
- Catch, clean, and saddle ponies before the zoo opens.
- Monitor equine health and behavior, promptly reporting illnesses or unsafe conditions.
- Ensure compliance with all Pony Ride protocols and enforce safety rules for guests and staff.
- Complete daily reports accurately and in a timely manner.
- Assist in training volunteers and interns.
- Collaborate with supervisory staff to determine appropriate training techniques and enrichment programs for equines.
- Provide exceptional customer service to guests, ensuring an engaging and enjoyable experience.
- Assist other Park District employees when needed.
Who You Are
You're a motivated team player with:
- At least six (6) months of experience working with equines.
- A strong work ethic and the ability to work independently or as part of a team.
- Good physical condition with sufficient strength and mobility.
- Mechanical aptitude, including the ability to use tools, equipment, and machinery.
- Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
- Ability to work a flexible schedule, including nights and weekends.
- Bilingual in Spanish (a plus).
Schedule
- Part-time seasonal position, working up to 30 hours per week.
- Weekend and holiday shifts required, with occasional extended hours.
- Position limited to 1,000 hours per year.
