Job Details Job Location: CUSR Center - Champaign, IL 61821 Position Type: Seasonal Salary Range: $17.25 - $17.25 Hourly CU Special Recreation Summer Camp Assistant Director Champaign Park District – Seasonal, Non-Exempt (May–September, not to exceed six months)
About the Job:
Make a meaningful impact this summer by helping lead an inclusive day camp experience for youth and young adults ages 5–22. As the CU Special Recreation Summer Camp Assistant Director, you’ll support daily camp operations, mentor staff, and help create safe, engaging, and joyful recreational experiences for participants of all abilities. This is a hands-on leadership role ideal for someone passionate about inclusion, youth development, and teamwork.
Summary of Responsibilities
- Support the Summer Camp Director with daily program operations and planning
- Help design and lead inclusive recreational activities for participants ages 5–22
Supervise, train, schedule, and support part-time and seasonal camp staff
- Ensure participant safety by following all policies and responding to incidents appropriately
- Maintain accurate records, including attendance, reports, and participant files
- Communicate effectively with parents/guardians, staff, and community members
- Assist with newsletters, schedules, payroll information, and program reports
- Monitor program supplies and expenses while adhering to budget guidelines
- Maintain a clean, organized, and welcoming camp environment

Qualifications:
Must be at least 18 years of age. Ability to plan and lead recreational activities for youth and young adults ages 5 - 22 years. Interest in working with people who have disabilities. Previous youth program leadership experience preferred. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with Park District staff, participants, parents/guardians, and the public.
Enthusiasm for working with children and a passion for creating joyful experiences. Strong leadership, communication, and organizational skills. Resourcefulness and adaptability to handle unexpected situations and changing needs. Commitment to participant safety and well-being, with a strong understanding of child development and best practices.
