Wilderness Air therefore sees the benefits to safety and proficiency in establishing its very own training facility, complete with a type rated C208 simulator.

We are looking for dynamic and energy packed suitable individual to join our training team. This person must be a self- motivated team player, and be dedicated and committed to providing excellent service within a high-pressure environment. The individual should have the ability to interact well and be able to form good relationships with employees across all levels. PURPOSE OF THE JO
B

Assist Wilderness Air under Training department to instruct the newly hired pilots in the Wilderness Way and procedures.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES 

  1. The Authorized Instructor is a senior pilot identified by the Flight Training Officer (FTO) and approved by the Wilderness Air Training Manager in conjunction with the Accountable Executive.
  2. An “authorized instructor” means a person who — (a) holds a valid and current ground or flight instructor rating issued by the CAAB for conducting ground training or flight training; or (b) is authorized by the Authority to provide ground training, flight training, or other training under the BCARS.
  3. Company Authorized Instructors shall be approved by the Authority prior to carrying out any training functions. Such letters of approval shall be retained in the pilot’s personnel file.
  4. An “authorized Instructor” authorization shall only be issued and valid when the following minimum requirements are met1.
  5. Valid CPL, Class 1 medical and applicable type rating
    1. An active line pilot, employed by the company.
    2. Valid CAAB flight instructor rating (or is approved by the CAAB to provide flight and ground instruction).
    3. 1200hrs total flying experience, and
      1. 200hrs PIC on a C208B (If pilot holds an instructors rating), or
      2. 400hrs PIC on C208B (If pilot does not hold an instructors rating)
    4. Completed all initial and recurrent training programs, as required to act as PIC on line operations.
    5. Satisfactorily completed the appropriate proficiency, competency and recency of experience checks that are required to serve as a PIC on line operations
    6. Completed the ground and flight training aspects of the company authorized Instructor Training Program.
    7. Satisfactorily completed the authorized Instructor competency assessment flight.
    8. Approved and authorized in writing by the CAAB for authorized Instructor duties.
    9. Approved and authorized in writing by the AM for authorized Instructor duties.
  6. Authorized Instructors report to the FTO and shall:
    1. Develop, maintain and demonstrate high standards of knowledge and adherence to applicable BCARS and the policies and procedures contained in the company flight operations manuals.
    2. Develop, maintain and demonstrate high standards of knowledge of the AFM, Company SOPs, aircraft systems and technical information.
    3. Develop, maintain and demonstrate high standards of flying proficiency in accordance with the Company SOP, AFM and accepted aviation practices.
    4. Continually seek to develop their knowledge on industry best practice with regards to flight training.
    5. Ensure the safe and proper conduct and completion of each training flight.
    6. Ensure that all flight training is carried out in accordance with the flight training procedures contained in OMD.
    7. Ensure that all flight training is carried out in accordance with the flying methods, policies and procedures contained in OMA, B and C and that pilots are taught to operate the aircraft in accordance with these policies and procedures.
    8. Ensure that all training flights (or sorties) are authorized by the FTO.
    9. Ensure that a briefing is carried out before each training sortie. This briefing shall include a recap of previous training flights (where applicable); a review of the upcoming training sortie, including training aspects to be covered, the expectations and standards required for completion, any potential threats, hazards or concerns with the sortie.
    10. Ensure that a briefing is carried out after each training sortie, reviewing the training aspects that were covered, areas that the training pilot performed well in and areas that the training pilot needs to work on.
    11. Oversee and ensure the correct completion of all pre-flight paperwork by the trainee pilot prior to a training flight or series of flights.
    12. Oversee and ensure that all 90-day records for each training sortie are completed correctly and filed in accordance with the procedures outlined in the Flight Operations Manual.
    13. Oversee the aircraft pre-flight inspection carried out by the trainee pilot and confirm as far as practicable that the aircraft is in fact airworthy for the intended flight or series of flights.
    14. Ensure full disclosure on training records and ensure that flight training records are an accurate and detailed representation of the flight training that occurred.
    15. Complete all flight training records before 8:00am the following day or before the next flight, whichever is earlier
    16. Ensure when in Maun, the completed flight training records are filed in the “current flight training” folder before 8:00am the following day or before the next flight, whichever is earlier.
    17. Ensure when away from Maun that the flight training records are sent to the Base of operations via email or WhatsApp before 8:00am or before the next flight, whichever is earlier.  
    18. Ensure that when a lack of connectivity prevents the flight training records from reaching the base of operations that a copy of the flight training records is left at the camp or wilderness air offices in Victoria falls, Livingstone or Kasane.
    19. Ensure full disclosure to the FTO and Training Manager regarding training flights and the conduct and progress of a trainee pilot, informing the Flight Training Manager as soon as possible of any safety concerns they might have regarding a trainee pilot.
    20. Inform the FTO and Training Manager of any shortcomings, concerns or errors regarding flight training policies or procedures outlined on the Flight Operations Manuals. 
    21. Inform the FTO, Training Manager and Flight Operations Manager as soon as reasonably possible if unable to conduct a training flight.
    22. Ensure active participation in, and promotion of, the companies Safety Management System.
    23. In an emergency situation that requires immediate decisions and actions, take any action considered necessary for the continued safety of the aircraft and its occupants. In such cases an authorized Instructor may deviate from rules, policies and procedures.
    24. Following such an occurrence, the authorized Instructor shall submit a written report to the Flight Operations Manager, Training Manager, FTO and to the Authority, detailing and justifying such decisions and actions;
    25. Assist the FTO with improving and developing the training programs and syllabi outlined in the flight operations manuals.
    26. Ensure that, unless on leave or on a designated off day, they are always contactable by phone. Should a pilot be unreachable, then this shall be considered as AWOL.
    27. When designated for office duty, be required to be in the office from 08:30-16:30 and assist with any task required by management.
    28. When designated for standby duty, be required to report to the office within 30min of being called and be able to be airborne no later than 1 hour and 30 min after arriving at the office.
  1. At all times conduct their activities in a safe and professional manner, upholding and enhancing the good image of the company.
  1. An Authorized Instructor designation may allow a pilot to:
  2. Carry out pilot pre-employment suitability assessment flights,
  3. Conduct initial and recurrent flight and aircraft technical related ground-based training,
  4. Conduct ground and flight training for the issue or renewal of a type rating or license,
  5. Conduct line flying training for type rated pilots who have completed the initial supervised line flying sectors.
  6. Recommend to the FTO, training pilots for proficiency or route checks,
  7. Complete and certify personnel training records.
  8. An Authorized Instructor, who is also an approved Check Pilot, may be further authorized to conduct supervised line training in accordance with Civil Aviation (Aircraft Operations) Regulations, 2022. Regulation 127 (1), (2) & (4):

  1. An Authorized Instructor has the following authority:
  2. Has the final authority as to the safe and legal operation of an aircraft while in command of and supervising a training flight.
  3. Has the authority to delay, suspend or terminate any training flight should there be any reasonable concerns affecting the safe and/or legal continuation of the training flight.
  4. Has the authority to delay, suspend or terminate any training flight should there be any reasonable concerns as to the preparedness of the trainee pilot for the scheduled flight.

MINIMUN REQUIREMENTS

  1. Valid CPL with Class 1 medical
  2. C208B rating
  3. 1200hrs total flying experience, and
    1. 200hrs PIC on a C208B (If pilot holds an instructors rating), or
    2. 400hrs PIC on C208B (If pilot does not hold an instructors rating)
  4. Valid Instructors rating or Train the Trainer certification (preferrable)
  5. Instruction experience (preferrable)
  6. Knowledge on the CAAB regulations
  7. Leadership and Communication skills
