Island School Overview


The Island School, a not-for-profit organization based in The Bahamas, was founded to create and support transformational educational experiences with the vision of leadership effecting change, on the island of Eleuthera. The diverse educational initiatives, including our High School Semester and Summer Term, Deep Creek Middle School, Elementary Learning Center, and our Community Engagement and Partnerships, deliver unique educational journeys in conjunction with the authentic and meaningful work our organization undertakes in research and sustainable development at the Cape Eleuthera Institute, our research and innovation hub. We are reimagining what education is for, and redesigning how education is delivered.




Job Summary


The Island School's Teachers are full-time faculty that assist in delivering all aspects of the Semester program, including programs for Summer and Fall. This includes supporting various classes, activities and community events, serving as an advisor/mentor to students, performing residential duty, and generally participating in all aspects of campus life. Teachers are fully engaged in a 100-day semester with preparation and debrief time at the beginning and end of the term.




Our Teachers have various duties and responsibilities that contribute to student success. They plan and deliver lessons, assess student performance, create inclusive learning environments, collaborate with colleagues and parents, monitor student progress, and engage in professional development activities.




Essential Duties and Responsibilities



  • Assist in the delivery of academic classes and learning experiences

  • Assist with community engagement activities and projects

  • Fill additional support roles as called upon

  • Tutor students in the evenings with assignments and homework

  • Support daily morning exercise

  • Assist/co-lead 8 day sea-kayaking expeditions and/or 5 day camping/down island trips

  • Advise 4-6 students throughout the semester journey 

  • Be “on duty” 1-2 evenings per week and typically 3 weekend days per month to support
    student needs and after school programming

  • Participate with students and staff in the daily maintenance and care for the facility
    through chores and other tasks

  • Create interdisciplinary connections between all subjects (mathematics, english, history, literature, sustainability, marine research, marine ecology, social studies, sciences, scuba, sustainability and hands-on learning experiences)

  • Collaborate with researchers, staff and other school employees to enhance the student
    experience and utilize our campus, resources, the ocean and location as a classroom

  • Work professionally and cooperatively within the school community and broader South
    Eleuthera community

  • Full positive participation in weekly faculty and community meetings

  • Participation in periodic professional development opportunities

  • Participation in orientation, semester prep, and semester debrief




Qualifications & Experience 



  • Teaching credential and/or Bachelor's Degree

  • A love of exploring concepts through real world applications

  • Experience working with middle, high school or upper elementary students



  • Ability to support diverse learning needs within the educational program 



  • Excellent communication, social and problem-solving skills

  • Proficient computer skills especially Google-suite use

  • A commitment to culturally responsive teaching

  • Demonstrated intercultural competence 

  • The ability to live and work in a remote location within a small community




Desirable Qualifications



  • Outdoor education or expedition/ trip leader experience

  • Wilderness First Responder certification 

  • SCUBA, Freediving or Sea Kayaking experience or certifications

  • Spanish-speaker or Spanish language teaching experience

Schedule


The Cape Eleuthera Island School and its related entities operate year round and working hours vary depending on program needs. Programs and special events will require periods of time outside of normal working hours when staff must be on site for extended periods. The successful candidate should expect, and desire to work a variable and mission driven schedule.
