Salary Range: $16.00- $21.00 Hourly (D.O.E.)
JOB SUMMARY
Summer Day Camp Counselor represents and maintains the standards of the Recreation Services Department by conducting and supervising indoor and outdoor recreational and camp- type activities for youth ages 6 - 12, in a professional and safe manner.
TYPICAL JOB DUTIES
- Supervises children in day camp activities, ensuring that children have fun and interact with others in an appropriate manner. Ensures the safety of all children in the program.
- Contributes ideas for and prepares for daily events and leads group activities (i.e. games, hikes, art, etc.) accordingly. Participates in group games and activities whether leading or not.
- Develops relationships with children and parents, and answers inquiries from parents regarding program procedures and concerns about children.
- Supervises lunch and snack.
- Directs proper behavior and settles disputes.
- Cleans up facility at end of day for following day's use.
- Sets examples of safety and proper behavior for fellow counselors and children.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Ability to work well with children, including a high energy level and the ability to supervise groups of high energy kids.
- Ability to act quickly and accordingly to emergencies.
- Ability to work in many different places, often in outdoor environments. (i.e. offices, field trip destinations, etc.).
- Ability to report to work in peak physical condition and stay mentally and physically alert while on duty.
- CPR certification.
- Basic first aid skills.
- Must be at least 16 years of age.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- First aid certification.
- Van Driver Certification required for Head Counselor only
WORK CONDITIONS
- While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit, stand, walk, hike, drive, talk and hear.
- The employee is occasionally required to use hands to handle or operate objects, controls, or tools.
- Must be able to reach with hands and arms, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl, and smell.
- The employee must occasionally lift and/or move more than 50 pounds.
- Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
- Work is performed in both indoor and outdoor settings, including buildings, parks, playgrounds, vehicles and in and around bodies of water.
- The employee occasionally works near moving mechanical parts; in high, precarious places, and is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions.
- Work is performed in outdoor settings, in all weather conditions including temperature extremes, and includes day shifts.
- The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to high.
