Description

Principal Function: The Camp First Aid Specialist provides on-site minor medical care and oversees the camp's first aid program. Works as part of a team to deliver a safe, exciting, and educational experience to a group of campers age 5, 6 & 7, 8 & 9, 10 & 11, 12 or 13. Provides treatment to campers and staff for injuries that may arise from engaging in activities such as swimming and canoeing, arts and crafts, outdoor games, archery, hiking, and biking.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: Duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Places the safety and well-being of campers and staff as top priority.
  • Serves as role model for campers.
  • Provides on-site care, observation and evaluation for sick campers and staff, including traveling to the hospital or doctor’s office with any injured campers or staff.
  • Actively assists in staff training week and training as needed throughout the summer.
  • Document and maintain records of all first aid treatments and medications dispensed.
  • Controls and administers all camper and staff medications.
  • Reviews and maintains files of all camper medical forms and waivers.
  • Upholds privacy of all campers and staff.
  • Maintains inventory of all camp first aid supplies and requests supplies as needed.
  • Checks and maintains first aid related facilities, equipment, and personal first aid kit on a daily basis.
  • Provides information and supports camp staff on all medical and health matters and works with camp office staff on any medical or health related matters.
  • Reports daily to Camp Director any first aid treatments or health issues.
  • Assists all campers with special needs as outlined by ADA requirements.
  • Evaluates treatment trends and makes injury prevention recommendations to the Camp Director.
  • Serves as a resource and advocate for campers with food allergies.
  • Conducts any needed communication with the parents of campers in medical or health matters. Keeps the Camp Director informed of all such communication.
  • Participates in pre-season training and helps with end of season clean-up
  • Performs Camp Counselor functions as needed to ensure program operation. This may include leading youth in a variety of activities.

  • Must be 18 years of age or a graduate of high school.
  • High school diploma or GED is required.
  • Basic First Aid training and at least two years of practical healthcare experience (Certified Nursing Assistant, Home Health Aid, Medical Assistant, EMT) OR advanced first aid certification with some practical experience is required. This includes final year nursing school students or Physician Assistant school, Wilderness First Responder certification, or Wilderness First Aid certification desired.
  • Experience in childcare is required. Experience working with youth at a camp or school is desired.
  • Must be willing to adapt to new experiences
  • Must be able to work independently.
  • Must be able to maintain high professional standards of Conner Prairie.
  • Must have fun, friendly and patient personality.

Supervisory Responsibilities:  This job has no supervisory responsibilities.

Schedule and Hours: The standard hours for this position are Monday through Friday from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm. Staff training begins on May 19th, 2025, and camp begins on May 27th, 2025. The last day of camp is August 3rd, 2025. Staff must be able to attend staff training week and at least eight of the ten weeks of camp. Compensation: This is a full-time, seasonal position that is eligible for approved overtime. Benefits are not provided. Pay for this position starts at $14.50 per hour.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly is exposed to working in wet or humid conditions (non-weather), and outdoor weather conditions. The employee will occasionally work near moving mechanical parts, in high, precarious places, near fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, extreme cold (non-weather), extreme heat (non-weather), risk of electrical shock, and work with explosives. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud.

Conner Prairie is generally open from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Tuesday through Sunday, this position will be required to work beyond these hours and when open for special events.
