Description

Position Summary: 

The Summer Camp Counselor is responsible for the direct supervision of program participants and the planning and implementation of age-appropriate activities throughout the camp day.

Position involves regular internal contact and contact with outsiders generally on routine matters, including daily conversation with all of their groups of participants.

 

Required training first week of June

Camp hours are Mon – Fri 8:30am – 4:00pm

Additional hours before and after camp are available from 7am – 8:30am and 4pm – 6pm

Summer Camp runs from June 9 – August 8

Work Location:

The Recreation Complex – 111 E Foster Ave, Wood Dale IL 60191 as well as parks throughout the district.

Supervision:

Supervisor:  Recreation Supervisor, Camp Director, Assistant Camp Director

This position supervises: No supervisory responsibilities

 

Essential Job Functions:

  • Lead activities and practice active supervision of participants at all times.
  • Maintain head counts of campers at all times.
  • Help Lead Counselor to create lesson plans to be submitted to Camp Director.
  • Submit paperwork in a timely manner, which may include: attendance records, accident reports, behavior/incident reports, receipts, lesson plans, etc.
  • Communicate effectively with participants.
  • Maintain order and enforce rules during program.
  • Prepare materials for camp. 
  • Perform set-up and clean-up responsibilities for the program.
  • Ensure classroom and equipment is maintained properly and supplies are stored in an orderly fashion in the appropriate storage closets.
  • Adhere to scheduled hours.
  • Follow all bus and trip procedures while on camp field trips.
  • Work in conjunction with fellow staff members to support and adhere to the goals and objectives of summer camp.
  • Work well with other Park District staff members and report any issues to the Recreation Supervisor or the Summer Camp Director.
  • Supervise participants in and out of the water at the pool.
  • Demonstrate and support park district customer service standards.
  • Follow district and departmental safety, personnel, and administrative policies, procedures and ordinances.
  • Responsible for being trained and able to drive Mini Busses for program needs (those individuals 21+)
  • Provide a safe and welcoming environment for all participants.
  • Distribute flyers or other information to participants when required.
  • Communicate any accidents, safety concerns, maintenance issues, parent complaints, etc. to Summer Camp Director and Recreation Supervisor.
  • Attend required staff meetings and/or trainings.
  • Carry out any other duties as assigned, including substituting as needed.

 

Qualifications

Requirements / Qualifications:

  • Must be 16 years of age or older.
  • Seeking individuals that have availability Monday - Friday / Early June through mid August
  • Typical hours for the program are Monday - Friday from 8:30am - 4:00pm
  • There are opportunities to work extra hours from 7am - 8:30am before camp starts and 4:00pm - 6:00pm after camp ends
  • Previous experience working with children, childcare/babysitting, coaching or customer service preferred.

 

Ability to:

  • Swim

 

Required Certifications:

  • Possession of valid driver’s license
  • First Aid/CPR/AED certification or ability to obtain shortly after hire

  • Work is performed mostly in an indoor setting with some outdoor program site requirements
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee frequently is required to lift 50+ pounds

Environmental Considerations

May be exposed to outside elements conducting outdoor activities. Work is subject to both indoor and outdoor environmental conditions including air conditioning, heat/cold, humidity, outside elements and noise.
