Pay Rate Scale: $16.50+/hr; dependent upon qualifications

Job Summary

Under the direct supervision of the Recreation Program Assistant, the STEM Camp Counselor is responsible for supervising and implementing day-to-day camp activities for the Summer Recreation Experience camps. This position is a seasonal employee working approximately 20-25 hours a week and requires a highly motivated, enthusiastic, and responsible person to work in a fun environment with children in a summer camp setting. 

Essential Duties

  • Attend mandatory staff orientation and trainings.
  • Implement and lead various activities.
  • Instruct assigned camp activities competently and reliably.
  • Ensure the safety and wellbeing of all campers.
  • Develop and maintain effective public relations/communications with co-workers, campers, and parents.
  • Clean and maintain program area.
  • Maintain accurate records and alert the Recreation Program Assistant and/or STEM Camp Instructor to any issues or concerns.
  • Assist in evaluating assigned programs and make recommendations for improvement.
  • Supervise campers daily.
  • Provide a positive and encouraging atmosphere.
  • Perform all other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Must be at least 16 years old with an understanding of Day Camp procedures—prior experience working with children required.
  • Must have current CPR and First Aid certification or be willing to obtain certification before the start date.
  • Ability to lead recreational activities for children between 6-13 years old.
  • Should have an outgoing personality with good interpersonal skills.

Physical Requirements, Skills, and Abilities

While performing the duties of this job, some bending, kneeling, and reaching items off the floor and high shelves are required. Performing repetitive hand/arm movements as when playing games or conducting classroom activities. Able to sit and stand for sustained periods while interacting with children. Constant getting up and down from the floor and child-size table and chairs to accomplish daily activities. Physical set up of programs, special events, services, and facilities. Reading handwritten information and writing legibly. The employee must lift and/or move up to 50 lbs.

Working Conditions

The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. Employees’ general work area is divided between an indoor smoke-free environment with controlled temperature and fluorescent lighting and the outdoors. Employees will be required to work during various weather conditions, including cold and hot temperatures.  

Work Status

The STEM Camp Counselor position is a seasonal position with the option to work in other areas within the department once the camp season has concluded. This position will have hours that occur from June–August. This position is expected to work 20-25 hours per week during Camp.
