Travel Weeklythe leading business publication in the travel industry, is looking for dynamic, enterprising, experienced reporter to join our news team as the Senior Editor for Tours and River Cruises. In this role, you will play a vital part in keeping our readers informed about the global tour industry and the expanding river cruising market. The ideal candidate has a strong background in breaking news and business-news journalism who can consistently deliver timely stories. You’ll break stories on a regular basis; cultivate sources within the tours and river cruise sectors; identify and report on news and trends to write longer-form analysis pieces; and travel to report on news and innovative travel products. We’re looking for a news journalist who loves to work hard for a good news story. Ideal candidates must possess excellent reporting, writing and editing skills, as well as have experience in a fast-paced newsroom environment – you’ll work independently but also thrive in a collaborative atmosphere with our team of reporters and editors. This role will require regular travel.

This position will be based in the New York metro area. Candidates must be able to commute to our offices in Rutherford, N.J. or New York City and work a hybrid schedule. Flexibility is provided. 

Responsibilities include:

  • Reporting and writing breaking news articles, doing research as necessary to write in-depth analyses, producing exclusive enterprise reporting on trends and innovations, writing feature articles and question-and-answer interviews, all with the goal of serving the information needs of Travel Weekly’s readers.
  • Cultivating an extensive list of sources within the travel industry.
  • Working with art directors to develop photographic and graphic elements to illustrate articles.
  • Attending and reporting from industry conferences, conventions and events.
  • Engaging in social media and participating in Travel Weekly podcasts.
  • Representing Travel Weekly at various industry functions and serving as an occasional commentator to consumer media about beat-related news.
  • Traveling to report on tours and sailings on river cruises, with an emphasis on new and innovative product and itineraries.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: 

  • Experience working as reporter in a newsroom or at a newspaper, business journal, wire service or the equivalent.
  • Excellent reporting, writing and editing skills.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Be a self-starter; highly motivated with the ability to work independently as well as be able to collaborate with editors and other reporters. 
  • Be able to work well under pressure and meet aggressive deadlines.
  • Be proficient in the use of computer technology, including a familiarity with social media.
  • Possess excellent organizational, time management and interpersonal skills.
  • Demonstrate effective problem-solving and management skills.
  • Be able to travel on a regular basis to domestic and international destinations.

 Related Work Experience:

  • 3 to 5 years as a reporter or business writer.

Formal Education or Equivalent: 

  • Four-year college degree preferred. Commensurate experience (5+years in a similar role with a travel news outlet) is acceptable.
