Barkley Project Group (BPG) is a small consulting firm specializing in project management services for clean energy and energy efficiency projects and other community-owned initiatives. We are based in Nanaimo BC and currently work with more than 30 First Nations communities in British Columbia and the Yukon. About the Role


Reporting to the Geothermal Team Lead, the Geothermal Geoscientist plays a key role in collaborating with project teams to provide high quality geoscience services to support geothermal exploration and early-stage geothermal development. Under the mentorship of the Geothermal Exploration and Project Managers, the Geothermal Geoscientist is involved in various tasks such as field work, data compilation and management, mapping, analysis and a contributing to project reporting and community engagement activities. The Geothermal Geoscientist has a foundational understanding of geothermal energy, and a genuine interest in working with Indigenous communities in Canada’s emerging geothermal industry.


What You Will Be Doing


Duties/responsibilities may include (but are not limited to the following):

  • Contribute to geoscience literature reviews, gather and analyse data, to advance project specific geothermal exploration goals
  • Participate in geoscience field reconnaissance and sampling programs
  • Assist with the logistics and coordination of surface-based exploration activities including field preparation, geoscientific surveys and lab analyses
  • Utilize relevant software related to geoscience data gathering, mapping, geological modelling, geophysical modelling and analysis
  • Make geological observations and measurements, ensuring quality control and assurance in collaboration with Geothermal Exploration Specialist.
  • Collaborate with an integrated team with geochemists, geophysicists, drillers, and reservoir engineers, both internal and external project teams
  • Communicate effectively with clients, including collaboration with community liaison personnel, technical teams, and other stakeholders and rightsholders
  • Provide on-site client representation and quality assurance during field activities
  • Participate in geothermal drilling and testing programs, including wellsite support, sampling, and monitoring of shallow and deep exploratory, slim hole, and development drilling
  • Assist in the analysis, compilation and interpretation of results from lab, survey, drilling and modelling activities related to geothermal exploration and early-stage development
  • Engage in community outreach activities, including developing engaging presentations and educational content, and gathering community feedback related to geothermal development
  • Work to understand, incorporate and prioritize local Indigenous knowledge in geothermal exploration projects and early-stage development recommendations
  • Support the preparation of funding proposals and procurement documents related to geothermal exploration and early-stage development
  • Coordinate and maintain project records including data management, document management and storage, including routine and mandatory project reporting
  • Contribute to a positive and rewarding work environment, by sharing ideas, energy and personal commitment, while supporting the growth of a successful, innovative, high-quality project management consulting practice at Barkley Project Group
  • Attend meetings as requested
  • Perform all other duties or tasks as assigned by your manager


What You Will Need


  • 3 to 7 years of relevant work experience in a geoscience role
  • An undergraduate degree or advanced diploma in Geology, Geophysics, Geological Engineering or a relevant geoscience field required
  • Basic knowledge of geothermal energy resources, uses, technologies, and systems
  • Understanding of sedimentary basin stratigraphy and exploration is an asset
  • Registration, or ability to register, with EGBC or NAPEG as a P. Geo, P. Eng, GIT or EIT is an asset
  • Experience in oil and gas, hydrogeology, or mining field is an asset
  • Familiarity with hydrogeology, petrophysics, geochemistry, data analysis, and geophysics is an asset.
  • Experience with geoscience software such as Accumap, Leapfrog or GeoScout is an asset
  • Proficiency in data analysis and software (e.g. Excel, Matlab or similar) is an asset
  • Experience operating drones and a license to operate would be an asset
  • Experience working with Indigenous communities is an asset
  • Self-motivated and passionate about renewable energy, climate action and Indigenous rights
  • Proven ability to work independently with minimum supervision
  • Very strong attention to detail
  • Ability to work in remote settings in variable and adverse weather conditions, lift and carry weights of up to 50 lbs, and conduct fieldwork safely in rugged wilderness settings


Working Conditions


  • Hybrid (Time split between home office and field work) - Desired candidate must be located in Western Canada.
  • Core work hours are 10:00am-3:00pm, Monday to Friday, 40 hours per week required
  • Travel will be required to field assignments across BC, including remote communities, requiring a valid driver’s license and reliable transportation


Compensation & Benefits


  • Compensation pay range for this position is between $75,000 - $97,000 per year.
  • 3 weeks' vacation to start
  • 3 paid office closure days over the holidays
  • 3 paid personal days per year in addition to 5 paid sick days
  • Two weeks per year – work from anywhere in PST/MST time zone
  • $350 per year Health & Wellness allowance
  • Minimum $25 monthly cell phone allowance
  • Funds towards professional development annually
  • Reimbursement for full cost of professional dues each year
