Fitness and Activities Camp Counselors work with their team to plan and implement activities and games to provide a fun half-day camp experience for children ages 3 - 7 (depending upon the session) and 8 -15 (depending upon the session). Most weeks offer an option for campers to attend either a morning or afternoon session. Counselors will also have the opportunity to assist with special events and other programs conducted throughout the season.   

   

SCHEDULE* 

Training weeks (required) 

  • May 19 – May 30, 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. (no training on Monday, May 27) 

Regular Schedule (after training weeks) 

  • Planning Blocks: June 11 - July 31 (during camp weeks)
    • Wednesdays and Thursdays 8:00 a.m. - 8:30 a.m. 
  • AM and PM Camp Weeks: June 9 - June 27; July 14 - August 1 
    • 8:30 a.m. – 12:15 p.m. and 12:45 p.m. - 4:30 p.m., Monday – Friday 
  • AM Only Camp Weeks: July 7 - 11; August 4 - 8
    • 8:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m., Monday - Friday 

Opportunities for additional hours may be available during these weeks 

 

No camps are scheduled for the week of June 2 – 6; June 30 - July 4. Opportunities for additional hours are available during these weeks.  

July 4 and July 26 are work days. 

Additional hours as requested/assigned. 

*This schedule is subject to change, at the discretion of the Park District. 

 

Up to five days off may be requested off, if done so by May 30. Time off requests will be considered in the order they are received. Exceptions will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis. 

 

APPLICANT REQUIREMENTS 

  • Must be at least 18 to apply. 
  • Must have reliable transportation.  
  • Must have proven leadership/supervisory experience.   
  • Must have a strong interest in working with participants and peers of all ages while spending time outdoors.   

 

JOB DESCRIPTION 


SPECIFIC DUTIES & EXPECTATIONS 

Administrative   

  • Maintain accurate program records through attendance and record keeping for the Activity Squad Camp and all other programs as assigned.    
  • Submit weekly planning schedule of activities and prepare written evaluations of the programs.   

Programming   

  • Plan & conduct a well-rounded program to meet the fitness and recreational needs of the children in the camp.    
  • Plan a schedule of activities, games, and occasional crafts to provide a fun experience for children in the parks. Demonstrate, lead and teach activities.    
  • Supervise a group of 16-24 children in a park setting with co-counselors.    
  • Research ideas for new program activities.      
  • Assist with special events and other programs conducted throughout the season.  

Public Relations   

  • Serve as a public relations liaison with the community.    
  • Maintain an atmosphere of cooperation and camaraderie between program participants and staff.   
  • Conduct a litter sweep and safety check at the park first and last thing each day.   

     

    REQUIRED SKILLS, ABILITIES, AND QUALIFICATIONS   

    • Proven experience working with children.    
    • Proven leadership experience.    
    • Interest and/or some experience with outdoor fitness or nature education is beneficial, but not required.

       

    JOB FIT   

    • Staff must be able and prepared to work most of their shift outdoors.
