This position pays $16.50 hourly while working remotely and $150 daily while working at camp.

 

The Equestrian Program Manager is responsible for overseeing the wrangler team in implementing and delivering Camp Menzies’ horseback riding programs for campers entering grades K-12 and adults. Under the supervision of the Camp Director, this position ensures activities are safe, fun, appropriate to the campers’ age and abilities and follows Girl Scout Safety Activity Checkpoints and American Camp Association (ACA) standards. The Equestrian Manager is responsible for maintaining and caring for the herd of horses that live at camp during the summer and provides management of the physical operation of the horseback riding program, facilities and equipment. 

 

1.    Manage the horse herd, the horseback riding facilities and the equipment at Camp Menzies

  • Maintain the health and wellness of the horse herd on site at Camp Menzies, taking note of hoof care, dental care, de-worming, immunizations, and wound care; and informing Camp Director when any horse health issues arise
  • Maintain health records of each horse and provide first aid within professional scope as needed
  • Manage GSHCC equestrian program facilities and equipment, collaborating with Camp Director and Property Manager to repair and purchase equipment as needed
  • Ensure proper use of equipment by staff, volunteers, and program participants
  • Ensure horses are being maintained and cared for, for the duration of the summer, including when camp is not in session
  • Submit orders for equipment and supplies when needed, ensuring timely arrival of materials
  • Set up the horseback riding area prior to and during staff training

2.     Program

  • Promotes progression in activities and experiences, considering age level, abilities, and interests of campers, specifically in the horse programs & opportunities 
  • Plan, direct, and supervise a safe and fun horseback riding program that aligns with GSHCC values and overall safety guidelines 
  • Create lesson plans that meet camp goals and ensure each program is being provided with their horse needs
  • Evaluate riding abilities of campers and staff
  • Design, deliver and evaluate experiences that serve girls entering grades K-12, ensuring compliance with GSUSA Safety Activity Checkpoints, American Camp Association guidelines, GSHCC policies, and all state and federal laws 
  • Develop and implement crisis and risk management procedures for equestrian program for Camp Menzies location and maintain equestrian program manual
  • Act as subject matter expert for equestrian experiences for Camp Menzies

3.    Supervising camp staff as assigned

  • Train staff on horse health, safety, and programming policies and procedures during pre-camp training and throughout the summer
  • Assist in the planning and implementation of staff training, including but not limited to the equestrian program, Wrangler in Training Program, and Junior Wranglers
  • Participate in pre-camp staff training, as well as in-service training sessions
  • Supervise Wrangler in Training and Junior Wrangler campers, alongside the assistance of the Leadership Program Manager & Wranglers 
  • Supervise camp volunteers assigned to the horse area if applicable
  • Provide feedback and guidance to staff based on regular observations 
  • With the assistance of the Camp Director, conducts periodic evaluations and supervisory conferences
  • Oversee a team of 3-5 staff, including training, coaching, scheduling, and evaluating performance in providing a safe, fun, and high-quality equestrian program
  • Perform daily check-ins with team members to inform of any changes to schedules or operations and check on health and wellbeing of each team member
  • Plan and facilitate pre-session team meetings to ensure team is prepared for upcoming camp session

4.    Assist with Camp Operations

  • Serves on the camp management team and is responsible for creating a culture of inclusion, belonging, and support
  • Assist with planning and implementing the camp schedule with the other managers prior to the first day of the session
  • In collaboration with Camp Directors, plan, conduct, and participate in staff training
  • Ensure Girl Scout ratio standards are followed at all times
  • With the Camp Directors, follows through and files camper discipline reports each session as needed
  • Supports all areas of camps as needed

Other Job Duties:

  • Attends administrative staff meetings
  • Participate enthusiastically in all camp activities, planning, and leading those as assigned
  • Assist with camp healthcare needs as needed, including camper check-in, supervision of ill campers, and non-emergency transport
  • Assist with camp emergency procedures as outlined in the Camp Menzies EAP
  • Drive campers, staff, and equipment for trips off camp property
  • Assist with camper units as needed, including staff coverage
  • Assist in cleaning and maintenance of camp after each session and during pre-camp and end-of-season cleaning period
  • Perform other job duties as assigned 
     

Qualifications

  • Minimum age 21, preferred
  • Maintain certification as an instructor from a nationally recognized organization or riding school, or documented experience as an instructor within the last three years, or be willing to obtain after hired
  • At least +1 years managing a horse program, including program instruction and staff management
  • CA driver’s license with clean driving record and a minimum of five years driving experience 
  • Must have a high level of interpersonal and customer service skills, confidently presents to large groups of people, facilitates effective two-way communication, fosters and maintains positive relationships
  • Possess a can-do attitude with the ability to plan, organize and prioritize work, maintain a high degree of accuracy and attention to detail, and manage multiple deadlines
  • Current certification in First Aid , Wilderness First Aid and CPR*, desired (trainings can be provided)

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Training and experience in working with children and teenagers, desired
  • Knowledge of program development and common horse ailments and treatments 
  • Desire and ability to work with children outdoors in varied conditions
  • Ability to motivate and maintain effective working relationships with staff from diverse cultures and all organizational levels
  • Ability to effectively and tactfully supervise adults
  • Excellent spoken and written communication skills

Physical and Intellectual Aspects of the Position:

  • Ability to communicate in English to provide necessary instruction to campers and staff
  • Ability to observe animal behavior, assess its impact and possible outcome, enforce appropriate safety regulations and emergency procedures, and apply appropriate techniques as necessary 
  • Ability to observe camper behavior, assess its appropriateness, enforce appropriate safety regulations and emergency procedures, and apply appropriate behavior-management techniques
  • Ability to observe staff behavior, assess its appropriateness, enforce appropriate safety regulations and emergency procedures, and apply appropriate management techniques
  • Visual and auditory ability to identify and respond to environmental and other hazards related to the activity
  • Physical ability to respond appropriately to situations requiring first aid. Must be able to assist campers and animals in an emergency (fire, evacuation, illness, or injury) and possess strength and endurance required to maintain constant supervision of campers
  • Able to lift and carry 50 pounds regularly 

OTHER WORKING CONDITIONS    
We are a Girl Scout camp. We expect this position to work collaboratively and closely with Girl Scouts for the greater part of the role. Some physical requirements of this position could be endurance including standing, some bending, stooping, and stretching.  Requires the ability to listen to others, observe others’ actions, read text and information; comprehend instructions and manuals, and physical ability to move about the camp property in various environmental conditions. Willingness to live in a camp setting and work irregular hours delivering program in the facility available. Operate with daily exposure to the sun and heat and other environmental conditions.

While performing the essential duties/responsibilities of this job, the employee lives for up to 12 weeks in close proximity to others, including sharing living quarters, restrooms, laundry facilities and a common staff lounge. May only use personal electronics (such as computers, phones and other devices) only during personal designated breaks and out of sight of campers. Multi-tasking in a fast-paced environment is an integral part of this position, as is the ability to work with high-stress situations based on the nature of GSHCC mission and daily work.
