This Opportunity

Bay West is seeking to grow our Regulated Materials Assessment and Industrial Hygiene services by adding an Environmental Scientist/Asbestos Professional to our team. You will work on-site at project/client facilities performing asbestos, lead, and other regulated material sampling and abatement oversight, air monitoring, and air sample analysis. You must have the ability to assess the condition of building materials and quantify regulated materials and serve as field supervisor for asbestos removal projects in compliance with and enforcing regulations and client requirements. You will support and conduct industrial hygiene assessments/surveys at facilities by detecting health hazards, including those caused by airborne contaminants, toxic substances, and harmful physical agents, by observing and analyzing work operations and processes, materials, equipment, work habits of facility occupants, and interviewing facility occupants. Additionally, you will be responsible for measuring the magnitude of exposure to workers of all environmental hazards by executing standard tests, such as collecting and analyzing chemical samples, taking noise measurements, and comparing findings to established occupational health and safety standards.

Your Key Responsibilities

You will support and conduct industrial hygiene assessments/surveys at facilities and also support Bay West’s environmental consulting service line as an Environmental Scientist.

  • Conduct pre-demolition/renovation building surveys.
  • On-site monitoring including, but not limited to, asbestos, indoor air quality, lead, mold, HVAC, and various OSHA compliance following regulatory requirements and project specific documents/work plans.
  • Perform appropriate monitoring including necessary calibration and data collection.
  • Interpret results and respond appropriately.
  • Perform project oversight/supervision.
  • Maintain equipment provided to complete tasks including PPE, computer, other assigned equipment in addition to shared equipment and supplies.
  • Acquire and maintain certifications.
  • Abide by company health and safety requirements and site-specific provisions.
  • Follow QA/QC requirements.
  • Develop summaries, generate photographic logs, and input field work documentation.
  • Support the project manager and assist with or prepare the final client deliverables.
  • Conduct field work as requested, to include out-of-town travel for up to two weeks at a time, multiple times a year
  • Read/understand SOPs and obtain training on specific field tasks required
  • Accurately and efficiently conduct environmental sampling (air, water, soil, sediment) in accordance with the supplied work plan and SOPs with minimal oversight
  • Assist Site Supervisor in various highway construction projects as well as conducting roadway preconstruction investigations
  • Oversee the proper excavation of contaminated soil during remediation and construction projects under supervision of a Site Supervisor.

Who You Are

Required Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Possess a valid driver's license with acceptable driving record
  • Must be comfortable and able to work while wearing Level C Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), which includes a full-face respirator and self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) along with Tyvek and Saranex suits.
  • Occasionally the position may require working evenings, weekends and extended out of town working assignments.

Preferred Qualifications

  • BS or BA - Geology, Earth Sciences, Environmental Science or Related
  • MDH Certified Asbestos Inspector
  • MDH Certified Asbestos Site Supervisor
  • MDH 2-Day Asbestos Air Sampling Certificate of CompletionΒ 
  • One to two years of experience conducting regulated material surveys and/or air monitoring
  • 40-hour OSHA HAZWOPER Certification and/or up to date on 8-hour refresherΒ 
  • Completed NIOSH 582 equivalency course training

Physical Requirements

  • Repetitive motions: substantial movements (motions) of the wrists, hands and/or fingers (including reaching)
  • Frequently lifts up to 10 lbs. over an 8-hour period and occasionally up to 50 lbs. over a four-hour period.
  • Able to work at elevated heights.
  • Frequent exposure to non-hazardous and hazardous work environments including contaminated air, soil, dust, fumes, smoke and other toxins
  • Ability to work outside in varying conditions, such as high heat, high humidity and extreme cold in remote locations.
