M+ is a museum dedicated to collecting, exhibiting, and interpreting visual art, design and architecture, moving image, and Hong Kong visual culture of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. The M+ Conservation and Research Department focuses on the preservation and long-term care of a diverse and unparallel collection of twentieth- and twenty-first-century visual culture, including design, architecture, moving image, and visual art. The team employs contemporary conservation approaches to address the challenges of diverse materials and media, technology integration, and artist intent. This includes detailed documentation of materials, techniques, and practices; addressing ephemeral and live elements; implementing preventive measures to mitigate deterioration; and developing customized methods that respect the artist's vision. Central to their work are interdisciplinary and interdepartmental collaborations, engagement with living artists or pertinent stakeholders, collaboration with external colleagues and institutions, and the use of up-to-date technology for digital preservation.

Housed in a state-of-the-art facility spanning 1,600 sqm, the conservation studios and labs are furnished with equipment tailored to the unique needs of various disciplines. Working collaboratively, the international team has specialisations in objects and sculptures, installations, paintings, Asian and Western paper, photographs, time-based media, preventive conservation, and scientific research, ensuring the care and preservation of the collection.

  

Join in supporting our conservation team: M+ provides a dynamic and evolving work environment, welcoming the support of conservation professionals to meet the challenges of managing conservation needs and collection access. 

You will be responsible for:

  • providing assistance to M+ conservation team in daily operations, including preventive and curative conservation of M+ collection items; 

  • supporting the conservation team with matting and mounting efforts which may designing and fabricate boxes/envelopes for the safe storage and protection of collection items;

  • assisting with preparation of collection items for exhibitions and loans under the supervision of an M+ conservator;

  • performing basic direct preventive conservation activities under the supervision of an M+ conservator to stabilize collection materials for digitization or photography;

  • assisting with the general maintenance and organization of the conservation laboratory and ordering supplies;

  • maintaining accurate records of all completed tasks and using effective communication skills to convey achievements or changes in the scope of work that may impact project deadlines; and

  • performing additional duties as required, such as providing administrative assistance in digital image processing, printing, and record filing.

You should:

  • possess a post-secondary degree or equivalent diploma, preferably in Fine Arts, Applied Arts, or Design;

  • have 2-3 years of relevant professional experience;

  • ideally possess formal or on-the-job training in craftsmanship, such as bookbinding, paper crafting, woodworking, or hot metal working is a plus;

  • demonstrate excellent manual dexterity and observational skills, with attention to detail even under time pressure;

  • be able to focus on detailed tasks for extended periods while maintaining efficiency in performing the assigned duties;

  • exhibit strong interpersonal and organizational skills, with the ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment;

  • be proficient in Microsoft Office software; experience with digital photography, Collections Management System (TMS), and Adobe Bridge/Photoshop is a plus;

  • have the physical ability to lift and carry moderate loads (15-20 kg);

  • ideally have an interest in art, handicraft, design, and/or architecture; and

  • have excellent written and oral communication skills in both English and Chinese.
