Description

The Climbing School (CS) Instructor position at Momentum is a dynamic position that covers the adult instructional needs at Momentum Climbing Gyms. It requires knowledge of gym operations, technical climbing skills, and exceptional interpersonal communication.  


ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Instruction

  • Teach Momentum's Core Class series (Learn to Climb, How to V3, How to V5) 
  • Regularly work with groups of 6 people with varying skill levels
  • Available to provide private instruction to beginner and intermediate level climbers
  • Willingness to learn and conduct climbing clinics on specific skillsets (endurance, dynamic movement, hold types, training, etc)
  • Follow Momentum's teaching methods to ensure a consistent experience throughout our gyms

Administration

  • Work closely with Program Managers to understand business direction, growth, and philosophy 
  • Aid in growing Climbing School Class enrollment
  • Instruct regularly occurring classes and private lessons  
  • Develop program ownership among instructors to continually grow positive program culture
  • Attend ongoing training and staff meetings as needed

Customer Service and Facility Obligations 

  • Instruct classes and personal coaching
  • Well versed knowledge of all climbing school offerings - price, times, and dates and content
  • Ability to put immediate needs of participants first at all times
  • Ability to command respect, enforce safe climbing practices, recognize unsafe conditions, and discuss any concerns with fellow coaches and participants in a professional manner

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS

  • Part-time 
  • Hourly Compensation DOE (starting at $20/hour+)
  • Days and times are flexible - Must be available 1-2 weeknights and 2 weekends per month.

Requirements

Hours and Availability

  • PART TIME- regularly scheduled 4-6 hours per week with opportunity to increase that with private coaching
  • Preferred as an adjunct to other gym duties (Operation staff, youth programs, routesetting etc.)
  • Weekends and evenings required, potentially on short notice

Experience, Skills, and Certifications

  • Preferred at least 5 years climbing experience, minimum 3 years and show a strong enthusiasm for climbing
  • Experience in the disciplines of bouldering and sport climbing
  • Preferred 5.12 sport climbing, V7 bouldering, traditional experience
  • Experience in customer service, teaching, or group facilitation 
  • Experience with formal instruction
  • Individuals must be highly organized and able to maintain complex personal schedules
  • Must be able to communicate clearly and effectively in person, through email and phone
  • Basic computer skills; including familiarity with Microsoft Office and Google Drive
  • Have the flexibility to manage an ever-changing workload with varying levels of clientele
  • Willing to respond to unexpected tasks with a positive attitude

Environmental and Physical Demands

  • Comfortable working in a loud, fast-paced environment on a regular basis 
  • Comfortable speaking in front of and providing instruction to large groups
  • Be comfortable working at height, moving up and down a climbing wall
  • Continuously stand and walk on unstable and uneven surfaces for long periods of time
  • Ability to demonstrate climbing skills as need. Technique and hard skills
  • Able to repeatedly lift, move, and carry up to 50 lbs of weight on a regular basis
  • Able to balance, kneel, pull, push, and grasp objects as needed
