Camp Outlook Summer Staff

Camp Outlook
Full-time
On-site
Kingston, Ontario, Canada

Company Description

Camp Outlook is a fast-growing Canadian non-profit that provides backcountry trips to youth who can benefit from a wilderness experience, free of charge.

Outlook was started in 1970 by Ron Kimberley, a Queen’s University Medical Student, who was a camping enthusiast and believer of the therapeutic value of the wilderness. For over 40 years of operation, Outlook brings youth experiencing barriers in the Kingston area on 5, 9 and 14-day canoe trips in Algonquin park throughout the summer, free of charge.

Job Description

You’ll work with an inclusive, hands-on, collaborative group that takes youth on canoe trips in Algonquin Park. For many campers, this will be their first wilderness experience, and you'll be sharing your knowledge and love of the outdoors.

The program is cost covered. All costs associated with the placement are paid for directly by Outlook, as Outlook provides accommodation, food, and trainings. Outlook also covers the cost of valuable certifications, including CPR "C"/ First Aid, Bronze Cross, Advanced Wilderness First Aid, ORCKA Level 1, and Mental Health First Aid. You'll be getting your hands dirty and learning how to solve problems on the fly – from teaching youth to paddle to starting fires in the rain.

No canoeing or guiding experience necessary – just a willingness to learn!

Qualifications

Who you are

  • Curious and adventurous – you genuinely like learning from people and jumping into new challenges.

  • Great communicator – you listen first, then share knowledge.

  • You’re stoked on spending time outdoors.

  • You're available to work from May-August.

Bonus points if you

  • Have experience working with youth
  • Have experience as an activity instructor or guide
  • Kind of like the smell of campfire in your hair

Additional Information

Camp Outlook starts with 4 weeks of staff training in May, where you'll build the skills and experience you need to lead youth on canoe trips. You'll lead 3 youth canoe trips between June and August, ranging from 5 to 14 days in total.
