Position Summary
Under the direction of the Camp Hafaday Director, camp counselors will supervise and effectively lead campers in a variety of activities. Counselors will provide a safe and nurturing environment for campers, will be actively involved in all camp activities, and will maintain a positive attitude at all times.

 

Essential Functions
1.    Supervises a group of children between the ages of 3-6 years old. 
2.    Plans and implements program activities which are culturally relevant, developmentally appropriate, and consistent with YMCA values.
3.    Adheres to program standards including safety and cleanliness standards.
4.    Attends all staff meetings, trainings, and orientation.
5.    Follows YMCA policies and procedures, including those related to medical and disciplinary situations, child abuse prevention, and emergencies.
6.    Maintains positive relations with campers, parents, and other staff. 
7.    Ensures that administrative functions are performed including attendance, incident/accident reports, and parent communication and medication appointments. 
8.    Guide and provide assistance to other camp staff working within camper group. Work with Camp Director and Unit Directors to ensure program and staffing quality. 
9.    Assist with camp pickup and drop off. 

10. Participate and assist in swim lessons. (Do not have to know how to swim)

 

QUALIFICATIONS:
1.    Desire and ability to work with children ages 3-6 years old. Previous experience working with children preferably in a day camp or early childhood education setting. 
2.    At least 16 years of age per state of CT licensing.
3.    Completion of required training within 1 week of hire as well as obtaining any certifications required for position prior to start.
4.    Physical ability to respond appropriately to emergencies and situations requiring first aid, and to continually supervise campers. 
5.    Demonstrated ability to communicate, supervise and work with assigned ages and skill levels and provide necessary instructions to enforce safety regulations.
6.    Willingness to accept supervision and guidance.
