OVERVIEW

Established in 1963, Associated Students, Inc. (ASI) is a non-profit corporation guided by a student board and managed by full-time professional staff. ASI is a part of the Cal Poly Pomona Division of Student Affairs with a dashed reporting line to Administrative Affairs. ASI serves the entire campus population, including over 26,000 students, by providing opportunities for student engagement, student employment, and a multitude of programs and services such as recreation and wellness, student union and activities, student government, and childcare. ASI operational support areas include human resources, financial services, information technology, facilities management, and marketing. Since 2014, Associated Students Inc., Adventures has been providing unique recreational opportunities to over 12,000 Cal Poly Pomona students annually. Everyday students and staff within this community challenge themselves to embrace new opportunities and partake in life-changing experiences that bring full value to their college experience.  Hosting both technical and experiential programing, Adventures focuses on creating competent recreators within both indoor and outdoor disciplines. Through our wilderness outings, Bronco Peak rock wall, Gear Rental Center, instructional workshops, and certification courses, Adventures provides an opportunity for students to build a strong community that embraces inclusivity, learning and the development of lifelong hobbies and friends 

POSITION DEFINITION 

Under general supervision from the Adventure Education Manager and Adventures Supervisors, the Adventures Route Setter is responsible for setting high quality routes at the Bronco Peak. The Route Setter is responsible for maintaining the standard set by the Adventures Supervisor of Route Setting, forerunning routes set by setters/volunteers, and assists in maintaining all inventory and equipment used at Bronco Peak. The Route Setter performs skilled tasks and has considerable independent judgement and decision-making skills

ESSENTIAL DUTIES 

  • Sets routes that are appropriate for the climbing community and that demonstrate the expectations of all Route Setters at the Bronco Peak  
  • Foreruns routes set by staff/volunteers and recommends alterations to comply with Bronco Peak standards  
  • Update the Bronco Peak climbing routes with the designated grade distribution, turnover, rate, and setting standards  
  • Assists in the maintenance of all Bronco Peak related inventory and equipment inspection logs  
  • Arrive on time to scheduled meetings, work, or special events  
  • Maintain current knowledge of ASI and Campus Recreation programs and services  
  • Attend trainings, meetings and workshops as required  
  • Maintain open communication with the Adventure Education Coordinator  
  • Respond to emergencies and injuries and provide care as required until the arrival of emergency medical services   
  • Perform other duties as assigned    

QUALIFICATIONS

  • USA Route Setting Level I Certification, preferred  
  • Current CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer certification (Employment offer contingent on obtaining certification within 30 days of hire, training provided by ASI)  
  • Minimum of 1 year of indoor rock climbing experience  
  • Minimum of 20 hours of experience route setting preferred  
  • Outstanding customer service and interpersonal skills  
  • Ability to act calmly and effectively in emergency situations  
  • Ability to follow routine verbal and written instructions  
  • Ability to effectively communicate clearly and concisely, both verbally and in writing  
  • Ability to maintain professional work conduct  
  • Ability to make independent decisions and make recommendations  
  • Ability to adhere to work rules, follow directions, use time effectively and work productively without close supervision  
  • Ability to operate a computer workstation using word processing, spreadsheet and other computer applications in use  
  • Demonstrated ability to work with a diverse student population and campus community

EMPLOYMENT ELIGIBILITY 

Employment with ASI is open to any Cal Poly Pomona student who is eligible to work and has the legal right to work in the United States. In addition, student employees must be currently enrolled in a minimum of 6.0 units (undergraduate) and 4.0 units (graduate), international student employees must be enrolled in a minimum of 12.0 units (undergraduate) and 6.0 units (graduate) at the end of the add-drop period. Student employees are required to have a minimum overall and Cal Poly Pomona GPA of 2.0 and be in good academic standing with the University. Individuals enrolled only in Extended University are not eligible for hire. Exceptions to the unit load requirement are allowed during the summer term and for students who have applied for graduation for the current term. 

WORK ENVIRONMENT

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit, talk, and hear; manual dexterity, eye-hand coordination, and verbal communication; use of office equipment: telephones, calculator, copier and fax. Must be able to walk, stand, bend, and lift up to 45 pounds.
