    Position Overview and Responsibilities:

    “Compliance with the processing requirements of Chapter 215.422, F.S. is mandatory. Persistent failure to comply with this section by any agency of the state shall constitute good cause for discharge of employees duly found responsible, or predominantly responsible, for failure to comply. In carrying out the duties of this position, the incumbent is expected at all times to be aware of and abide by the Department’s Standards of Conduct, as well as any and all department and/or work unit rules, directives, policies, procedures, and/or general orders applicable to performing the duties of this position.

    This is a moderately independent work providing Visitor Services, Resource Management, Maintenance, Administration and Protection of parks within the Florida State Parks system. 25% VISITOR SERVICES – Explains facilities and services provided for public use, enjoyment and education; meets visitors, answers questions, provides information and directions. Attempts to resolve visitor complaints while maintaining good public relations. Provides natural and cultural history interpretive programs and unit specific services as directed.

    25% RESOURCE MANAGEMENT – Observes, maintains and protects the natural, cultural, historic and archaeological resources of the park. Knowledge & experience in natural resource management techniques such as exotic species removal, prescribed fire, plant community restoration and related activities. Participates in vegetation and wildlife management plans; maintains optimum species control via natural and chemical means. Implements site restorations projects. Participates in water resources management plans. Collects and records resource management data.

    30% MAINTENANCE – Constructs, cleans, maintains, and repairs park grounds, facilities and equipment utilizing appropriate tools and equipment. Makes routine inspections to insure proper maintenance standards are met. 10% ADMINISTRATION – Prepares forms and reports on a wide range of subjects. Answers telephones, operates park radio and various office equipment and maintains logs. Conducts purchasing and fiscal activities in compliance with established procedures. Collects fees, performs cash register transactions, reconciles receipts, and conducts inventories. Answers correspondence and maintain park files.

    5% PROTECTION – Performs routine patrols and takes appropriate action to insure visitor safety and adherence to park rules; insures adherence to the Park Protection Plan. Opens and/or secures park facilities as appropriate. The duties of this position require the incumbent to reside on the property. 5% Other related duties as required.

    Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

    KNOWLEDGE IN:

    Natural resource management General methods and techniques used in the repair and/or maintenance of park facilities, sites, equipment and grounds Basic math computations

    SKILLS IN:

    Using a variety of hand and power tools and equipment Maintenance of facilities and grounds Operation and use of various kinds of vehicles and heavy equipment including tractors and bulldozers

    ABILITY TO:

    • Conduct inspections and maintain park facilities, equipment and grounds
    • Communicate effectively verbally and in writing
    • Identify and investigate problems
    • Establish and maintain effective working relations with others
    • Performs physical labor using assorted power/gas tools and equipment

    Accurately prepare reports Collect fees and operate cash registers Understand and apply rules and regulations

    • Provide visitor assistance services
    • Conduct interpretive programs

    Work rotating shifts including nights, weekends and holidays Successfully complete ranger academy

    • Maintain a valid driver’s license

    Successfully complete background and fingerprint check

    Minimum Qualifications:

    Position of Special Trust Requirement:

    This position is designated as a Position of Special Trust in accordance with DEP Directive 422, Positions of Special Trust or Responsibility. Successful completion of background screening will be required for this position.

    Crystal River Archaeological State Park 3400 N Museum Point Crystal River, FL 34429

    A National Historic Landmark, this 61-acre, pre-Columbian site has burial mounds, temple/platform mounds, a plaza area and a substantial midden. The six-mound complex is one of the longest continuously occupied sites in Florida. For 1,600 years, the area serves as an imposing ceremonial center for Native Americans.

    People traveled to the complex from great distances to conduct trade and bury their dead. It is estimated that as many as 7,500 Native Americans may have visited the complex every year. Primarily an archaeological site, the park is located on the edge of an expansive coastal marsh. Anglers may catch saltwater and freshwater fish.
