PSA Snowcat Guide
General Purpose:
A Snowcat Skiing Guide for Purgatory Snowcat Adventures is responsible for ensuring the safety, enjoyment, and success of guests while skiing in backcountry terrain accessed via snowcat. Guides will lead groups of skiers and snowboarders through deep snow and remote mountain terrain, ensuring a safe and enjoyable experience while also educating guests on avalanche awareness, terrain features, and environmental conservation.
This is a seasonal position from 12/15/2025 to 04/15/2025. Dates are subject to change based on the availability of the applicant and needs of the business. Hiring for our seasonal positions occurs on a rolling basis. This position will remain open until filled.
Essential Duties/Responsibilities:
Safety Management:
● Conduct thorough pre-trip safety briefings and avalanche awareness talks with guests.
● Ensure guests are properly equipped with necessary safety gear (beacons, probes, shovels, etc.).
● Assess current avalanche conditions and terrain hazards, expressed through pre and post trip Safety and Risk Management forms.
● Monitor weather and snow conditions throughout the day, adjusting plans as needed.
● Lead and manage rescue operations if needed, following established protocols.
● Proficiency in navigating CalTopo for the operations runlist.
● Utilize Avalanche Hazard Reduction techniques as part of the organization of the runlist.
Guiding & Terrain Management:
● Lead groups on guided backcountry skiing and snowboarding tours via snowcat.
● Select appropriate terrain for groups based on skill level, conditions, and safety considerations.
● Communicate with guests regarding terrain features, snow conditions, and skiing techniques.
● Ensure all participants maintain safe distances and follow group protocols on the mountain. Customer
Experience:
● Provide high-quality customer service to ensure an exceptional experience for guests.
● Educate guests on avalanche safety, local ecology, and mountain geography.
● Offer ski technique tips, helping guests improve their skills in the backcountry.
● Maintain a positive and friendly attitude to enhance guest satisfaction. Equipment & Vehicle Support:
● Assist with the loading and unloading of guests and their equipment onto the snowcat.
● Ensure all necessary safety equipment is in good working condition (avalanche beacons, probes, shovels, etc.).
● Perform basic snowcat maintenance checks and assist with snowcat operations as needed (depending on snowcat experience).
● Additional on-snow travel techniques of snowmobiling, skinning and bootpacking.
Emergency Response:
● Identify and mitigate risks associated with backcountry skiing.
● Respond to emergencies and provide first aid and evacuation procedures as necessary.
● Keep current with first aid and avalanche rescue training certifications. Teamwork & Communication:
● Work closely with other guides, snowcat operators, and staff to ensure smooth operations.
● Communicate effectively with the team to coordinate logistics and ensure the safety of all participants.
● Report daily to operations staff on guest feedback, terrain conditions, and any issues that arise during the trip.
Qualifications
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
Skills and Qualifications Required:
● Certification in Avalanche Safety (Pro Level 1 or higher).
● First Aid and CPR certification (WFR, WEMT, or equivalent preferred).
● Proven experience in backcountry skiing or snowboarding, including technical terrain.
● Strong communication skills, with the ability to manage groups and provide clear instructions.
● Knowledge of avalanche rescue techniques and equipment.
● Ability to assess and manage risks in an unpredictable and potentially hazardous environment.
Preferred:
● Previous experience as a professional guide in backcountry skiing, snowboarding, or similar outdoor activities.
● Additional avalanche training.
● Snowcat operation or mechanical experience (not required but preferred).
● Wilderness First Responder (WFR) or higher.
● Type 1 Blaster permit. Physical Requirements:
● Excellent physical condition with the ability to ski or snowboard in challenging terrain for long hours.
● Ability to carry and manage ski equipment, safety gear, and medical kits.
● Ability to respond swiftly and decisively in emergency situations.
Work Environment:
● This position involves working in extreme winter conditions, at high altitudes, in remote backcountry environments.
● Must be comfortable working in a variable, outdoor environment in all weather conditions.
● Daily transportation with snowcats and snowmobiles.
