    The Department of Conservation and Recreation seeks qualified applicants for the position of Park Ranger assigned to the agency's Mounted Unit. The Ranger will conduct mounted patrol, programs, special and ceremonial events, at assigned park(s) to promote compliance with regulations, provide visitor information, provide for the safety of visitors and protection of the natural, cultural and park resources, prepare and conduct education programs, lead walks, participate in special events and any other duties to carry out the mission of the Bureau of Ranger Services.

    Duties:

    § Conduct, provide and participate in mounted park patrols, programs, special events, ceremonial events, mutual aid, mounted unit training, and mounted search and rescue operations.

    § Respond to and assist park staff at major incidents, assist at special events, and occasionally assist at statewide incidents or functions.

    § Transport agency horses to destinations when assigned.

    § Assist stable staff with maintenance and cleaning in and around the stable as needed.

    § Care for and maintain agency horses.

    § Assess and maintain trails and perform other maintenance duties as assigned.

    § Participate in all mounted ranger activities, initiatives, and programs.

    § Produce and provide informal and formal informational/educational programs, demonstrations, and materials to schools, civic groups, and general public as requested, in areas such as ranger programs, park activities and services, outdoor skills, natural and cultural history, and search and rescue.

    § Prepare and conduct mounted unit programs and stable tours for general public, schools, special needs, and other special interest groups.

    § Plan, design, and create displays, brochures, flyers, and other public literature.

    § Act as liaison to the public, and coordinate and participate in volunteer activities.

    § Effectively utilizing techniques and available resources, enforcing applicable laws and regulations, providing visitor services, assessing facility resources, assisting visitors with first aid, and other public services as required.

    § Issue parking citations and enforce agency regulations.

    § Maintain agency equipment.

    § Complete and maintain Bureau records, reports, files, and logs.

    § Attend seminars, workshops, training sessions, etc., to maintain proficiency.

    § Provide emergency response services according to DCR policy; supervises employees of lower grade upon request.

    § Additional duties as required

    Preferred Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

    § Ability to stand, ride and walk for prolong periods of time.

    § Ability to work in the environment of a horse stable and paddocks including, but not limited to, being around animals/horses, hay, shavings, horse products, and having the ability to lift bales of hay, lift 5-gallon water containers/buckets, bags of shavings and grain, and working in extreme weather conditions.

    § Ability to successfully complete the agency's Mounted Unit Certification

    § Basic knowledge of Microsoft Office tools.

    Substitutions:

    I. An Associate's degree or higher with a major in park or recreation management, natural resource management, water resources management, environmental education, or park interpretation may be substituted for the required experience.*

    *Education towards such a degree will be prorated on the basis of the proportion of the requirements actually completed.

    Special Requirements:

    • Possession of a current and valid Massachusetts motor vehicle operator's license.
    • Possession of a current and valid CPR (cardio-pulmonary resuscitation) certificate from the American Red Cross or the American heart Association.
    • Possession of a current and valid standard first aid and personal safety certificate and first responder certificate issued by the American Red Cross.
