YMCA Camping and Outdoor Education offers outdoor experiences that foster personal growth and build community.  After taking part in our programs, children and youth return home more confident, independent, and with new friendships. YMCA Camp Pine Crest is an overnight camp serving children, families, and organizations through naturally focused programs that embody the mission, vision, and outcomes of the YMCA. Camp Pine Crest is made up of 650 acres of Muskoka wilderness surrounded by 3 interconnected lakes with 8km of shoreline; has over 26km of hiking trails and 7,500 sq. ft. of dock and has 60 buildings.

Our Camp Wellness Staff cares for the mental and physical health of the Pine Crest community.  Daily responsibilities such as health and wellness checks, first aid assessments, medication administration, and stocking first aid kits are important components to keeping our staff and campers well.  This team also works with the Out-Tripping Directors to support health concerns from our out trips, contributing to decision-making in regard to treatment in the field.  Wellness staff must be willing to listen, problem solve, and work as a team to promote wellness and health at Pine Crest. They will provide leadership and role modelling to all camp staff regarding sun safety, healthy eating, adequate sleep, and regular exercise among others.

In this role, you will:

  • Support campers and staff to have positive experience at camp; through check ins with campers, camper groups and counsellors
  • Support our camp community’s overall health & wellness; actively providing resources and support to the camp community, reviewing health forms of campers and staff, being aware of pertinent health information that may require special attention throughout the summer and checking in with staff and campers
  • Working with wellness director/ camp nurse to keep inventory of all medical supplies, laundry, restocking, organizing camper and stock medications, etc
  • Respond to and rectifies first aid situations; ensuring they are handled promptly with care, and communicates with camp director, external health care staff/hospital and parents as necessary
  • Support camp director and coordinator in leading health and wellness trainings to staff, ensuring we have a focus on both physical and mental health & safety
  • responsible for dispensing camper medication according to direction of camper health forms
  • Support camp out-tripping program; through checks in pre-and-post out-trips, and supporting counsellors in packing and inventorying first aid kits
  • Ensure administrative tasks are completed accurately and on time including all paperwork associated with the camp wellness program being filled out as required; maintains complete records of any accident/incidents
  • Continuously builds relationships with members, staff, volunteers, and community partners
  • Responsible for attending all staff trainings and meetings; showing up on time, and actively participating contributing to the development of all staff members 
  • Ensure Health & Safety procedures, including Covid-19 guidelines, are being followed and maintained; and shares with the staff team the duty of ensuring it is clean, organized and safe to ensure the health & safety of all campers, staff and volunteers
  • Act as a positive role model for all participants and fellow staff through embodying the values of the YMCA, Pine Crest’s guiding principles, YMCA policies and procedure, and Ontario Camps Association guidelines
  • Perform other duties as assigned

    You bring:   

    • G Class license
    • Currently enrolled in post-secondary education such as Nursing, Child and Youth Studies, or Social Work considered asset
    • Mental Health First Aid & Wilderness First Aid considered an asset
    • Previous experience working with children
    • Must be legally entitled to work in Canada and be authorized to work full time hours (37.5 hours per week)
    • Ability to work effectively with others and independently to achieve optimal collective results
    • Demonstrated ability to work in a team environment
    • Well-developed interpersonal, and relationship building skills; ability to establish rapport and excellent communication with members, staff and volunteers
    • Ability to provide mentorship and guidance to both inexperienced and seasoned staff
    • Ability to deliver feedback in a timely, professional, and constructive manner
    • Flexibility regarding assigned working hours, including days, evenings, overnights, weekends, and holidays required
    • Commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion and building a sense of belonging
