As Operations Specialist you will support the Operations department by being a point person for our fleet of vans and trailers, EOSM (End of Season Maintenance), Loads, and Equipment. You will be responsible for maintaining Backroads equipment's quality, availability, reliability, and safety and a valued stakeholder in stock inventory. We are looking for somebody who will provide world-class support and service to everyone who comes through the 801 Tuscany door. 


The Ops Specialist will provide outstanding support and service to all Field Staff so that they can provide Backroads’ guests with an exceptional travel experience. The ideal candidate for this role is driven to produce high quality results, is proud of their work, and truly cares about improving their work environment. This employee can work independently without much direct supervision and has the foresight to see upcoming needs and plan accordingly. This position is based in St. Giovanni Valdarno/Italy, reporting to Tuscany Ops Assistant Manager – Massimo Zampieri . *European work permission Required. The contract is for a year-round position, salaried or hourly depending on nationality and payroll, working 40 hours/week.


Major Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Meet weekly with the Operation Coordinator, the Operation Expert and the Trip Preparation specialists

  • Be the point person in extensive fall and winter re-working of Vans, Bikes and Equipment (end of the season maintenance and winter bikes overhaul)

  • Provide supervision and consistency for Field Staff on the warehouse floor during the spring departure season and the fall return/overhaul period.

  • Oversees End Of Season Maintenance/Van Loads/Van Unloads/Vans coming through the region (Unit drives)

  • Ensure unit inventories are accurate and complete, both pre-departure and at the end of season.

  • Assist in the administering of a warehouse traffic schedule, moving vehicles, keeping traffic corridors clear.

  • Assist Ops Assistant Manager in maintaining and acquiring needed inventory supplies.

  • Assist in the packing & shipping of equipment for international distribution.

  • Assist with facility issues and improvements as needed.

  • Assist in the supervision and security of all Backroads tools, supplies, trailers, vans, and facilities.

  • Maintain organization and cleanliness of the storage and departure areas.

  • Work as a bike mechanic during the slower part of the year (bike roving, general bike repair)

  • Travel to perform equipment repair and overhaul seasonally as needed.


Required Knowledge and Skills:

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

  • Knowledge of Information Technology (computer hardware, software, internet applications)

  • Working knowledge of Office 365 (for budgeting and cost-benefit analysis)

  • Mechanical aptitude and experience with basic vehicle maintenance is a plus

  • Solid bike mechanic skills are a big plus

  • Exceptional organizational skills to keep clear track of materials and information, and strong attention to detail

  • Excellent Knowledge of Italian preferred (conversant + level desired)

  • Trip-leading or TPS work experience in Europe preferred. Strong interpersonal skills, teamwork, and sense of service.

  • Familiarization with the Leader Manual and departmental divisions within Backroads

  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team (both LD and Ops team)

  • Ability to organize and prioritize numerous tasks and complete them under tight time and budget constraints
