Description


Cary Youth Programs is seeking energetic, creative, and top-quality individuals at least 18 years of age who are enthusiastic about working with elementary- aged children or teens to serve as Track-Out Camp Counselors. 
 
Track Out Counselors are responsible for effectively organizing and instructing recreational and educational activities for youth day camps. Camp Counselors will supervise campers during programs, games, and field trips; assist with carpool in the morning and afternoon; and complete end-of-day cleaning procedures.

The Track-Out Camp Counselor will work varying hours within the program’s running time from 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM. No evening or weekend hours will be required.

 This is a part-time, non-benefited, year-round position, up to 20 hours a week, with a maximum of 999 hours per year.


Typical Tasks


  • Researches, plans and instructs camp activities.
  • Develops age-appropriate activities to keep children active and help them develop skills, teamwork and sportsmanship.
  • Leads groups of camp participants throughout different locations to ensure a safe and healthy camp for all participants during all activities (classroom, gym, outside, bus/transportation, off site field trips, etc.).
  • Uses effective communication skills to engage all children in daily activities.
  • Sets up, takes down, and works with others to sanitize/clean camp room and equipment daily.
  • Carries out appropriate behavior management procedures and escalates issues as needed to Track Out Camp Leadership handles camper emergencies
  • Assists with camp opening and closing.
  • Assists with camper drop-off and pick-up.
  • Performs other job-related tasks as required.



Knowledge, Skills and Abilities


  • General knowledge of youth programs.
  • General knowledge of equipment and supplies required for camp operation.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with co-workers and the public verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to acquire knowledge of Town of Cary policies, procedures, and services of the department.
  • Ability to understand and carry out verbal and written instructions.
  • Ability to effectively manage the activities, behavior, and safety of camp attendees.


Minimum and Preferred Qualifications


Education and Experience
Must be at least 18 years of age.
 
Requires a combination of education and experience equivalent to a high school diploma/GED.
 
Preference will be given to candidates who possess the following:

  • Some experience working in a camp setting or working with children in a group setting.
  • A CPR and First-aid Certification (training opportunities available)  
Physical Requirements
Work in this class requires the ability to be physically active and to stand for long periods of time. Work requires the employee to be able to work outdoors in challenging conditions, such as heat and humidity. An employee must be able to hear and talk in order to communicate with the public and with groups under instruction. An employee must be able to climb, walk unassisted and move about freely. Visual acuity is needed to read typewritten and handwritten materials and to view a computer terminal.

Requires drug testing and background check (which may include criminal check, education verification and credit history review) prior to employment.
