The Yukon public service has a unique opportunity for recent graduates who have a post-secondary diploma or degree but lack real-world work experience. With GradCorps, you can kick-start your career while putting your passion, ideas and energy to work with the Yukon public service.

The Department of Environment has a GradCorps opportunity for a Conservation Officer trainee. This position interprets, applies and enforces a variety of legislation and regulations related to parks, fish and wildlife, wilderness tourism and environmental protection. You will assist with both field and office work, including granting licences and permits, responding to public complaints, conducting school and field talks and workshops, and researching and making recommendations on related enforcement issues.

This position will work for a one-year Term from approximately April 2025 to April 2026. The salary will be 80% of the starting salary - $68,180

Essential Qualifications
Please note selection for further consideration will be based solely on the information you provide in your resume. If this opportunity interests you, please submit your resume clearly indicating your:

  • Bachelor of Applied Science in Conservation Enforcement, Bachelor of Natural Resource Protection or Renewable Resources Management Diploma with a focus on conservation and environmental law enforcement from a recognized college or university.
  • Demonstrated experience with a variety of wilderness activities including hunting, fishing, trapping and wilderness travel. Please include a brief cover letter detailing your wilderness experience.

 

Desired Knowledge, Skills and Suitability
Candidates should have and may be assessed on:

  • The candidate should have excellent oral and written skills, and demonstrate knowledge and sensitivity to First Nations culture, particularly respecting harvesting rights.
  • This is a front line field position which requires that the candidate have good interpersonal skills, the ability to function in conflict situations, work with other officers as a team and work independently under direction of the mentor.

 

Additional Information

Conditions of Employment:

  • Valid and unrestricted class 5 Yukon drivers’ license
  • Valid First Aid/CPR Certificates or able to acquire within 6 months
  • Valid Firearms Possession and Acquisition Licence or able to acquire within 6 months
  • Security Clearance
  • Comprehensive Medical Examination including Psychological Assessment

 

Job Requirements:

  • The candidate must be willing to work under adverse and difficult field conditions (sometimes cold or wet), sometimes for extended periods of time. While in the field, accommodations may range from backpacking tents to highway lodges. Travel by small aircraft (fixed-wing and helicopter) will be required and the candidate will be required to operate snowmobiles, ATVs and boats.  The individual must be prepared to take the necessary precautions to ensure their safety and that of their co-workers.
  • Shift work, including working weekends and wearing a uniform provided by the department.

    NOTE: To qualify for the GradCorps program, you must:

    • be a resident of Yukon or a person of Yukon First Nations ancestry*
    • have graduated with a diploma or degree from a recognized post-secondary institution within the past two years (2023, 2024 or 2025 grads – all requirements for graduation must be complete before internship start date)
    • have little or no work experience in your field of study

    *If you are a resident of Yukon who completed your studies outside of the territory, you may apply up to two years after graduation.
