We are currently seeking a talented individual to join the St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Secondary School team.  St. Francis School provides a faith-based, Roman Catholic education within the public school system of Yukon Education. Our school sits on the traditional territory of the Kwanlin Dunn First Nation and Ta’an Kwachan Council within the wilderness city of Whitehorse, Yukon. SFACS is a 8-12 school of approximately 450 students, serving a diverse cultural population. Our educational professionals facilitate academic excellence and model life-long learning. We assist students in developing a relationship with Jesus and appreciation of self and others. Essential Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Education in Secondary Education with a major in English or Social Studies;
  • Recent experience teaching English and Social Studies at the secondary or late intermediate level.
  • Recent experience teaching French is an asset.

Desired knowledge, skills, and suitability

The ideal candidate will possess these qualifications, skills, and knowledge, but also demonstrate suitability for the role and organizational culture:

  • Strong planning and organizational skills;
  • Ability to plan, organize and manage secondary students in general classroom settings;
  • Ability to adapt curriculum to meet a range of learning styles and abilities;
  • Ability to assess students’ learning and report progress to parents/guardians using Assessment for Learning and Outcome-based grading principles based on a competency based curricular framework;
  • Ability to teach students from a variety of backgrounds who are English Language Learners;
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, and collaborative skills working with parents, staff members, consultants, and community agencies;
  • Willingness and ability to participate in the total school program including religious education and social justice initiatives;
  • An appreciation of the cultural diversity of the Yukon with the ability to incorporate and promote this diversity within the faith life of the school community;
  • Knowledge of and sensitivity towards the culture and aspirations of Yukon First Nations and a culturally diverse student population.

Conditions of Employment

This is a designated position within the Yukon public service which requires the following condition(s) of employment:

  • To be a Teacher in Yukon, you must be certified in another Canadian province/ territory first.
  • Successful applicants will be required to undergo a security clearance including vulnerable sector check.

Additional Information

  • Candidates who possess qualifications, skills, and personal attributes that are appropriate for the assignment who do not hold a valid teaching certificate, at request, may be granted a letter of permission as a teacher issued in accordance with the Education Act
  • If you are a permanent (indeterminate) teacher in a Yukon school, you will need to seek permission from your Superintendent to apply on this temporary job
  • Preference will be given to the candidate who is a practicing member of the Roman Catholic Church, committed to excellence in Catholic Education. To receive preference, it is required to include a current Roman Catholic Pastoral Reference, current Teacher Faith Letter and current Baptismal Certificate. 

Qualified applicants for teacher vacancies shall be hired based on Article 49 Teacher Priority Hiring of the Yukon Association of Education Professionals Collective Agreement.
