Description

The Great Basin Institute, in cooperation with Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks (SEKI), is recruiting Reforestation Crew Members to support post fire restoration in SEKI from the 2020 SQF and 2021 KNP complex fires. The incumbent will support mixed conifer plantings in high burn severity and low natural regeneration sections of the fire footprints occurring in designated wilderness and non-wilderness areas. They will work with National Park Service (NPS) staff to implement measures to restore vegetation community form and function following catastrophic wildfires. Work involves hiking and backpacking in the backcountry along with some frontcountry responsibilities. Work schedule will generally be 10-hour days with opportunities to work overtime and on the weekends.

Note: This job description contains both duties common to crew members and crew leads. The lists summarize tasks, but it is not an exhaustive list. Crew leads are expected to be proficient in all crew member tasks, in addition to their leadership responsibilities.

A Temporary Special Assignment (TSA) employee is one who is hired for a specific temporary assignment external from the institute’s administrative operations with one of GBI’s partners for 52 weeks or greater or less than 52 weeks and may work full-time (30 or more hours per week) or part-time (less than 30 hours per week).

Essential Job Functions may include the following:

· Works with project leads on inspections, planting plan guidance, and safety / logistics

· Camping/backpacking up to seven nights in wilderness setting without formal restroom facilities or running water

· Moves equipment and sensitive communications between wilderness locations to the project leads and to the contract planting crews

· Performs inspections and quality control for planters/units they are assigned to

· Moves trees from stock or helicopter drop points to planting units, and may also plant trees in assigned units

· Checks and updates planters Avenza tracks daily

· Assist researchers with collecting effectiveness monitoring data and establishing new monitoring plots

· Contributing to basic duties at the campsite including cooking, cleaning and organizing crew equipment

· Maintaining a positive, respectful, and professional attitude when interacting with other members, leaders, staff, project partners and planters, project sponsors, and community members

· Coordinates frequently and effectively with crew leaders, crew members, contract planters, and agency

project staff so that errors are addressed immediately

Essential Duties (Crew Lead Specific):

· Coordinate with NPS staff for briefings and ensure crew readiness in PPE, training, and mental/physical capacity, and safety preparedness

· Lead crew emergency planning, and morning briefings

· Oversees data collection, submission, and accuracy

· Address and report crew welfare issues

· Promote a learning environment and ensure inclusivity

LOCATION

This position is based out of Sequoia National Park’s headquarters within Three Rivers, California. Crews will travel throughout the park to complete projects from their assigned field station.


WORK SCHEDULE

Start and end dates will vary based on weather conditions for planting

Start: March 10-31, 2025

End: May 2-31,2025

Temporary Special Assignment employees are eligible to receive holiday pay, if partner approved. TSAs holiday schedule will comply with the project partner holiday schedule, unless otherwise specified in their employment offer. TSAs working five (5) eight (8) hour days per workweek will be paid eight (8) hours for all holidays. TSAs working four (4) ten (10) hour days per workweek will be paid ten (10) hours for all holidays. Same with other approved/allowable workweek configurations; these can be accommodated accordingly with Banked Holiday(s).

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS

Full time, average 40 hours per week

· Compensation: $19.42-24.06/hour, depending on experience and position

· Benefits: Company-paid comprehensive medical, dental (with option to upgrade in coverage), and vision insurance.

· $25,000 Basic Life & AD&D insurance at no cost

TSA employees who serve a term under 52 weeks in duration, and have a thirty (30) day or less break between terms, and then sign a second term that (cumulatively) becomes greater than 52 weeks of employment, will be eligible for the >1-year TSA benefits (equivalent to Regular full-time employees).
