ROLE
We are seeking an experienced Scientific Applications Support Engineer to support the National Park Service’s South Florida Natural Resources Center (SFNRC) at Everglades National Park. In this role, you will support the installation, optimization, and maintenance of environmental modeling systems, assist with scientific programming workflows, and manage high-performance computing (HPC) environments that drive ecological and hydrological research.

RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Support the installation, troubleshooting, and maintenance of hydrodynamic and ecological modeling software
  • Manage HPC systems used for environmental simulations
  • Monitor hardware and memory performance to support scientific workflows
  • Maintain secure database connectivity for scientific tools (e.g., MySQL with RStudio, Python, Appaserver)
  • Provide technical support for scientific programming environments (e.g., C, C++, and Fortran)
  • Compile code and manage non-standard scientific libraries and dependencies
  • Collaborate with scientific staff to resolve technical issues affecting research model performance
  • Develop tools or scripts to automate performance tracking and system diagnostics
  • Document technical procedures and modeling environment configurations for internal use
  • Assist with system-level integration between modeling software and underlying infrastructure

KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS
  • Knowledgeable in supporting environmental modeling systems and scientific computing workflows
  • Knowledgeable in high-performance computing (HPC) system management and performance tracking
  • Skilled in compiling and troubleshooting scientific programming languages (C, C++, Fortran)
  • Excellent problem-solving and communication skills

BACKGROUND
  • Experience in configuring database access for modeling tools (e.g., RStudio, Python, Appaserver)
  • Experience supporting environmental modeling projects in hydrology, hydraulics, or solute transport required
  • Experience in HPC systems administration required
  • Experience in scientific programming environments (e.g., C, C++, Fortran) required
  • Experience in database integration (MySQL) required
  • Experience with DHI MIKE modeling suite preferred


EDUCATION
  • Bachelor’s degree preferred

Specific vision abilities required by this job include the use of computer monitor screens up to 100% of the time.
