Summary
With offices in San Francisco, Seattle, and Honolulu, the National Park Service Pacific West region works to safeguard our national park treasures for the enjoyment of future generations and to share their stories with more than 61 million visitors each year. The region is also instrumental in overseeing a variety of community assistance partnership programs.
Duties
The Pacific West Regional Director provides leadership for 65 diverse units of the National Park System in eight states and three U.S. territories. The Regional Director oversees a region with 5600 employees and a $865 million annual budget. Responsibilities include:
- Providing executive direction and line management to subordinate functional managers, and providing technical direction, and managing the delegated duties and responsibilities of organizational and national programs.
- Managing programs associated with interpretation, use, development, protection, maintenance, and environmental quality. Programs involve the maintenance of standards with respect to engineering, architecture, landscape architecture, history, archeology, forestry, and other natural sciences. They also include the development of a construction program, land acquisition, determination of priorities, fiscal control of funds and personnel, and administrative management necessary to accomplish the objectives of NPS legislation. Programs managed not only to have a local impact; they also carry national and international recognition and responsibility.
- Serving as a member of the NPS senior leadership team.
- Managing a broad spectrum of partnership programs.
- Providing leadership in NPS civic initiatives, promoting public involvement and dialogue in key planning, interpretation, education, and preservation issues.
- Maintaining effective liaison and working relationships with members of Congress; the Secretary of the Interior and members of his/her staff; officials of other Federal, State, and Tribal agencies; elected leaders (Governors, Chairpersons, Presidents, etc.) of American Indian tribes; mayors of major cities and other municipal authorities; and, a diverse range of organizations, groups, and individuals. Oversees a broad and varied external affairs program.
- Directing, identifying, and correcting visitor and job safety and health hazards, instructing employees on safety requirements for job assignments, reviewing and reporting loss incidents,
- Ensuring best practices in business management to protect park resources and provide visitor and community services.

- Selections are subject to Department approval. Initial appointments to the SES must have Executive Core Qualifications (ECQs) certified by an Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualifications Review Board before an appointment and will be required to serve a one-year probationary period.

- Agencies must request OPM approval to appoint the current or former (within five years) Executive Branch political appointees to permanent competitive service, non-political excepted service, or career SES position. Qualifications
We are looking for an individual with a proven track record of working with executive teams; possesses strong communication and interpersonal skills; has experience in park management and the preservation of parks in a large, geographically dispersed organization; experience and understanding of cultural and natural resources; experience leading fiscal and human resources functions, including attracting and retaining a highly skilled and diverse workforce.
To be considered for this position, you must clearly show that you possess the experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the duties of an executive. You must specifically address each of the Executive Core Qualifications (ECQs) and Technical Qualifications (TQs) listed below. Your narrative submissions should be clear and concise, and emphasize your level of responsibilities, scope, and complexity of programs managed, program accomplishments with results of your actions, policy initiatives, and level of contacts.
If you are currently in a career Senior Executive Service (SES) appointment, are eligible for reinstatement into the SES, or have successfully completed an SES Candidate Development Program (SES CDP) approved by OPM, you only need to submit a narrative statement covering each of the Technical Qualifications listed below. SES CDP graduates must submit a copy of their CDP program certification with their package.
