DEFINITION
The Recreation Leader II will provide and assist in coordination, organization, leadership, and supervision of a variety of recreational programs, camps, and/or community events. 
SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED
Receives immediate supervision from the Recreation Supervisor(s), Recreation Site Coordinator(s), or other designee(s). Exercises general supervision over assigned seasonal staff. 

Examples of Duties

Duties include but are not limited to:

  • Provide leadership for participants in recreation programs, summer camps, and special events. 
  • Provide leadership, oversight, and support to assigned staff.
  • Work with groups to lead and instruct recreation activities such as camps, sports, games, arts, crafts, music, and drama; involves supervision of children, youth, teens, and adults.
  • Participate in staff meetings to formulate and plan recreation program ideas; organize and implement special events.
  • Encourage involvement in recreational programs, activities, and special events by participating in the recreational activities.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.

Typical Qualifications

Knowledge of:

  • Procedures for developing recreational activities, programs, and special events.
  • Principles of supervision and leadership.
  • Occupational hazards and standard safety precautions.
Ability to:
  • Work with groups to lead and instruct recreation activities.
  • Proficiently perform duties related to outdoor sports and recreation.  
  • Provide a positive role model for children.
  • Take initiative to adapt recreation activities or special events as conditions warrant.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work including children, youth, teens, and adults.
  • Communicate clearly and concisely and carry out oral and written directions.
  • React with good judgment in emergency situations.
  • Work an irregular schedule, including evenings, weekends, and holidays.
  • Adhere to Town and department-established rules and regulations, including workplace safety regulations.
Experience and Training:
Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying.  A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:
Education:
Equivalent to completion of the twelfth grade. Early Childhood Education, Recreation Administration, or Communication classes are preferred.
Experience:
Two years of experience in recreational and/or child-related activities and programs preferred.
Licenses:
Possession of, or ability to obtain within the state required timeframe, a valid California, Class C driver’s license with an acceptable driving record. A valid California, Class B driver’s license with a passenger endorsement is preferred. Possession of, or ability to obtain upon hire, current Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)/First Aid Certificate is required. Must be able to pass an appropriate background check prior to the hire date.
