Definition



This position enforces and educates the public on rules and regulations, ensures patron safety, and provides general trail maintenance to Blue Sky and the Kumeyaay Ipai Interpretive Center. This Park Ranger supports the Interpretative Park Ranger with a variety of programs to include; school tours, guided hikes, flora and fauna educational events.



Receives general supervision from the Recreation Supervisor or assigned supervisor.  Exercises no direct supervision over staff.

Key Responsibilities

Management reserves the right to add, modify, change or rescind the work assignments of different positions and to make reasonable accommodations so that qualified employees can perform the essential functions of the job.
  • Provides responsible customer service at assigned recreation facility, including representing the City of Poway in the public's use of recreation areas, acting in a public relations capacity when assisting the public to enjoy the recreation area in a safe manner, and answering questions on the use of equipment and facilities within assigned park recreation areas.
  • Monitors the proper and safe use of recreational facilities by the general public; patrols and inspects recreational facilities to ensure adherence to rules and ordinances; opens and secures specialized park facilities; opens and closes parks at designated times.
  • Investigates reports of violations regarding Federal, State and local rules and regulations; approaches the public when infractions of rules are apparent; patrols wilderness trails to ensure safety of the public; diffuses potentially difficult situations; communicates with the Sheriff's Department when needed.
  • Provides park interpretive services, including the history of the parks, outreach to organizations, and tours of the parks and facilities.
  • Assists dock attendants with enforcing boat safety rules and checking permits; assists with dock attendant duties as needed.
  • Assists with volunteer program coordination; assists with supervising and training volunteers; participates in volunteer program activities.
  • Assists in community events, including setting up and taking down tables and chairs and facilitating activities.
  • Assists in monitoring reservations of recreation facilities; provides direct assistance to reservation groups.
  • Administers basic first aid and CPR as necessary.
  • Performs basic custodial duties and minor facility maintenance as assigned.
  • Responds to patrons' needs for assistance or information.
  • Ensures and performs proper opening and closing of the parks.
  • Observes safe work methods and makes appropriate use of related safety equipment as required.
  • Provides needed information and demonstrations concerning how to perform certain work tasks to new employees in the same or similar class of positions as directed.
  • Maintains accurate logs and records of work performed and materials and equipment used.
  • Enforces recreational facility safety rules; interprets and applies policies, procedures, laws, codes, and regulations; assists in education about the enforcement of rules and regulations.
  • Maintains attendance and punctuality that is observant of scheduled hours on a regular basis.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Requirements/License or Certificates Required

Experience: 
Two years of experience dealing with the public and customer service.
 
Education/Training:
Equivalent to the completion of the 12th grade.  
 
Licenses and Certifications:
  • A valid class C driver's license.
  • Must possess or obtain a California PC832 certificate within six months of appointment.  Once obtained, the certification must be maintained in valid status. 
 
Physical Demands
Must possess mobility to work in the field; strength, stamina, and mobility to operate a motor vehicle and to inspect various sites; vision to read printed materials and a computer screen and make inspections; and hearing and speech to communicate in person, before groups, and over the telephone or radio.  The job involves field inspection work requiring frequent walking at inspection site areas to monitor performance and to identify problems or hazards. Finger dexterity is needed to access, enter, and retrieve data using a computer keyboard or calculator and to operate standard office equipment Positions in this classification bend, stoop, kneel, reach, and climb to perform work and inspect work sites.  Employees must possess the ability to lift, carry, push and pull materials and objects weighing up to 100 pounds with assistance or the use of proper equipment.
 
Environmental Elements
Employees work in the field and are exposed to loud noise levels, cold and hot temperatures, inclement weather conditions, hazards, vibration, confining workspace, chemicals, mechanical and/or electrical hazards, and hazardous physical substances and fumes.  Employees may be exposed to blood and body fluids when rendering First Aid and CPR.  Employees are required to wear appropriate attire for the recreation activity to which they are assigned.  Employees may interact with upset staff and/or public and private representatives and contractors in interpreting and enforcing departmental policies and procedures.
 
Working Conditions
May be required to work various shifts including early mornings, evenings, weekends, and holidays at a variety of City facilities.

Examination Process

Applicants will be evaluated on the basis of relevant training, education and experience as presented in the application and supplemental questions. The process may include interviews and/or performance tests. Successful candidates will be placed on the eligibility list established, which will be in effect for a period of up to six months. A background investigation including LIVESCAN fingerprinting and a verification of a valid driver's license and satisfactory driving record from the Department of Motor Vehicles may be required. All appointments are also subject to the successful completion of a pre-placement physical examination that includes a drug screening. Applicants will be required to submit verification of the legal right to work in the United States. The City of Poway participates in E-Verify. All employees are required by law to sign a loyalty oath to the United States and the State of California Constitution at time of hire.
