Job Description:
The Great Basin Institute, in cooperation with our agency partner at Joshua Tree National Park, is recruiting one Outdoor Recreation Specialist. This position will assist with collecting visitor use data and reporting results to inform backcountry camping use, capacity, and associated trail planning.
Primary Responsibilities:Field reporting and recreation site monitoring to determine recreation potential and current recreational usage.Coordinating with other GBI and NPS technicians to survey key environmental conditions related to visitor use and capacity issues.Trail planning and maintenance associated with backcountry camping.Compiling and interpreting information; writing reports, and assisting a resource team in interpreting and deciphering types of uses and other resource concerns in backcountry settings and trails. Environmental monitoring and natural resource management, as well as damage documentation;GIS mapping and data management;
Contract Timeline:
• 42 week assignment (10.5 mo.)
• Anticipated Start Date: May 2023
• Full time (40 hours/week)
Location:
Joshua Tree National Park encompasses nearly 800,000 acres in southern California, a 1-hour drive from Palm Springs, 2- to 3-hour drive from Los Angeles and Las Vegas. Joshua Tree National Park is of special management concern, lying in the transition of the Mojave Desert and the Colorado Desert. Aside from the outdoor recreation opportunities and natural wonders within the park, Death Valley, the Mojave Preserve, as well as Lake Mead and Spring Mountains National Recreation Areas are nearby and afford a diversity of outdoor activities ranging from hiking, mountain biking and rock hounding to fishing, boating and skiing/snowboarding.
Field conditions at Joshua Tree include hot, arid days with high exposure to the sun, as well as cold, winter weather. Resources of the region include threatened and/or endangered species habitat, big game habitats, abandoned mine lands, and historic and prehistoric cultural sites.
Compensation and Benefits:
• Wage: $25/hr

Job Qualifications:
Technical requirements:
• Bachelor’s degree in recreation/wilderness management, social science, natural resources, or equivalent coursework and field experience;
• Experience collecting trail data and/or following established field collection protocols;
• Experience in visitor use monitoring, visitor use data collecting methods, and recreational impact monitoring methods;
• Ability to read and navigate using topographic maps and compass;
• Experience with use of hand-held GPS units and with GIS mapping;
• Familiarity with trail development and experience in trail and campsite maintenance;

- Motivated, self-starter, detail oriented, and possess good organizational skills;
- Ability to camp and work in remote locations and ability to work in the backcountry;
- Willingness to work independently or with and on interdisciplinary teams to support the mission of NPS and GBI, and accomplish targeted goals and objectives;
- Ability to work in harsh and rapidly changing environments and traverse uneven terrain;
- Clean, valid, state-issued driver’s license with ability to safely operate 4WD and all-terrain vehicles on unimproved roads;
