Kitty Hawk Kites is seeking a Marketing Manager to lead dynamic team working to expand customer acquisition and retention, deliver world-class content on a variety of channels, and most importantly, to help teach the world to fly.
The company has a multi-modal marketing strategy which relies on numerous, impactful touchpoints with our customers across interpersonal interaction, static advertising, multi-media content, and targeted digital advertising.
The Marketing Manager will be the leader of the marketing team, conversant in all aspects of the marketing strategy and the backbone of the department. The successful person in this role will be able to lead a small, highly collaborative, and remarkably industrious marketing team, and will help the company grow in ways within and beyond this job description.
A passion for growth; a holistic understanding of the company’s mission and core values; and a clear, communicative management style will help this person connect the dots and grow the business. Experience flying kites is a bonus, but don’t worry…you’ll learn.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
The Marketing Manager will be involved in setting and executing the marketing strategy and managing the marketing team, including but not limited to the following:
Budgeting:
As a retail business with 28 brick & mortar stores, 5 e-commerce platforms, and 30 recreational adventures, the marketing strategy and corresponding budget is substantial and varied. The Marketing Manager will develop a budget that incorporates team salaries, direct advertising spend, system costs, event expenses, and other line items to achieve a lean budget that executes on sales growth while remaining in line with industry metrics.
Systems Management:
Kitty Hawk Kites utilizes and manages a variety of enterprise software solutions to execute our business. These include but are not limited to: Internal Communications Software, SMS, Marketing & CRM, PPC advertising, Reservations Software, Website design & maintenance, Social scheduling, and others.
The Marketing Manager must understand these platforms to maximize their potential for improving communications and growing the business. Being able to “dive in” and push content or fix errors is critical, however the Marketing Manager’s role is primarily managing the team members who will be working in these systems every day, and identifying new software solutions to help the company grow.
Third-party relationship Management:
Kitty Hawk Kites is a community-oriented business and an OTA for the Outer Banks market. Building, maintaining, and growing relationships with allied business — such as real estate companies and advertising platforms — is crucial to the growth of our business.
The Marketing Manager will create new opportunities to reach new customers through these third parties, overseeing regular updates to listings, monitoring and responding to reviews, and ensuring the company’s brand is protected and improved, with the ultimate goal of improving qualified referral traffic to Kitty Hawk Kites websites.
Events:
The Kitty Hawk Kites “loop” marketing strategy connects retail customers to our recreation business, and to our online stores, and back again. The success of this strategy relies on powerful touchpoints throughout the customer journey, and events helps build trust and loyalty in our brand.
The Marketing Manager will oversee the work of the Events Coordinator to plan and execute events and to create more opportunities to connect with our customers at and outside of our stores. These events include kite festivals, themed festivals, community fundraisers, and participation in other community events. The annual events calendar includes roughly 30 industry events.
Email Marketing & CRM management:
Kitty Hawk Kites invested in HubSpot as a CRM and Email Marketing solution. Email marketing is a growing piece of our marketing toolkit, and the Marketing Manager will oversee the development of email marketing across multiple businesses and profit centers.
The Marketing Manager will work to improve existing automation, grow email subscription lists, and maintain cost/output from CRM/marketing platform spend.
Digital Advertising, PPC campaigns, Retargeting, and Organic Social:
The Marketing Manager will oversee the internal or agency delivery of a multi-channel PPC strategy. Kitty Hawk Kites currently advertises on Google, Bing, Meta, Pinterest, and other platforms. The goal is a 10x ROI across all platforms. We also invest considerable time in building organic audiences on social media platforms.
The Marketing Manager will direct the development of engaging, informative, and effective social media content to spread awareness and drive traffic to our stores and recreation activities.
Website Maintenance and SEO:
Kitty Hawk Kites owns numerous domains relating to our business or allied industry non-profits. Most of these sites are built on custom WordPress templates, but not all. The Marketing Manager will oversee all websites to ensure they are SEO-rich and consistently ranking higher in search organically. KHK currently outsources SEO oversight to an agency, which provides a weekly “hit list” of the most actionable SEO items. The Marketing Manager will lead this process to “shift” conversions from an SEM-led model to an SEO-led model.
