About the role
The Junior Diesel Mechanic will play an integral role in supporting the Fleet Manager with the day-to-day operations and mechanical upkeep of G Adventures’ vehicles, specifically focusing on maintenance and repair. This position requires a qualified mechanic with experience in diesel engines, preferably with exposure to Yutong buses and Euro 3 engines. The role is entry-level for a qualified mechanic and will provide opportunities to grow within the company while directly contributing to the operational success of our Southern Africa fleet.
What You'll be Doing
Mechanical Maintenance and Repair
Conduct routine maintenance, inspections, and repairs on G Adventures' fleet vehicles, with a focus on diesel engines.
Assist in diagnosing and resolving mechanical issues, particularly in Yutong buses and Euro 3 engines.
Provide on-road support for breakdowns and emergency vehicle rescues as needed.
Fleet Management
Maintain detailed vehicle logbooks, service histories, and inspection records.
Maintain all work orders and purchase orders in line with the servicing of the vehicles
Assist in the planning and scheduling of preventive maintenance and repairs.
Support the Fleet Manager in managing spare parts inventory, including ordering, stock control, and purchasing.
Documentation and Compliance
Assist with the compliance of vehicles with regional and cross-border operating permits, licenses, and roadworthy certificates.
Upload and organise vehicle documentation, logs, and invoices in the appropriate filing systems.
Workshop Operations
Support day-to-day workshop activities, including supervising vehicle cleaning and ensuring vehicles meet branding and presentation standards.
Assist the Equipment Coordinator with vehicle check-ins and check-outs, ensuring all gear and equipment are accounted for and in good condition.
Project and Logistics Support
Assist with the logistics and transportation of spare parts across Southern and East Africa.
Collaborate on special projects as required by the Fleet Manager or Regional Operations Manager.
Team Support and Leadership
Provide input into the improvement of procedures and help implement new systems to enhance fleet operations.
Act as a mentor and collaborator with other team members to maintain a high-performing workshop environment.
Rotate carrying the Fleet emergency phone as part of the team’s on-call schedule.
Desired Skills and Experience
Qualifications and Expertise
Qualified mechanic with a specialisation in diesel engines.
Prior experience working on Yutong buses or Euro 3 engines is highly desirable.
Minimum of 1-2 years of hands-on experience in a workshop environment.
Code 10 License
Key Skills
Highly organised and detail-oriented with excellent time management skills.
Ability to work effectively under pressure while meeting deadlines.
Proficient in computer literacy, including experience with maintenance tracking software, spreadsheets, and digital documentation systems.
Strong problem-solving abilities and demonstrated decision-making skills.
Strong oral and written communication skills in English.
