Fish and Game Program Technician (PCN 111443)

The Alaska Department of Fish and Game, Division of Commercial Fisheries is recruiting for a Fish and Game Program Technician located in Haines!

What you will be doing:

The Fish and Game Program Technician provides administrative, clerical, and technical support for Haines Area management and research projects for the Division of Commercial Fisheries, Division of Wildlife Conservation, and Sport Fish staff. This position provides customer service to the public with current information regarding fish and wildlife regulations and practices; performs fish ticket data entry, issues permits and harvest tickets, licenses, and tags, collects and records harvest reports, and seals animals such as bears, moose, goats, and furbearers, This position is the sole administrative support for accounting (budget tracking, processing receipts, office management) and personnel for the Haines office staff.

The working conditions you can expect:

This position is located in Haines, Alaska, one of the most scenic communities in Southeast thanks to its diverse wildlife populations, large salmon runs, and home to one of the largest concentrations of Bald Eagles in the world. The daily work environment is a professional office setting working close with management and research biologists and up to 15 seasonal field technicians. Specific tasks include the following:

• Provide the public with specific and detailed information on state, local area, and department regulations and management plans when answering hunting, trapping, sport fishing, and subsistence fishing inquiries.
• Reviews, codes, approves, and enter expenditures into the Department’s Admin Program - working with local vendors when discrepancies arise, or corrections are necessary.
• Issue various hunting and fishing licenses and permits, collect harvest information on commercial, sport, and subsistence salmon activities, and sealing brown/black bear, moose, goat, wolf, and furbearers.
• There may be opportunities to assist in wildlife population and salmon assessment surveys, depending on the incumbent’s interests.

• Proven ability to handle administrative tasks such as working with budgets, personnel paperwork, and processing and submitting purchasing documents.
• Knowledge of and experience with area and regional commercial, sport, and subsistence/personal use fishing and hunting/trapping regulations.
• Proven, excellent verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to comprehend complex regulations or policies and procedures, and then communicating them to staff and to the public.
• Experience using computers and computer software and the ability to enter/edit information into the department’s database programs and administrative applications.

Special Note: 

A valid driver's license is required.

This position may be in possession of, or have access to, firearms/ammunition.

Two years of office clerical experience or technical experience related to fish, wildlife or habitat resources;
OR
One year of experience providing advanced clerical services based on established procedures, precedents, and policies in administrative, informative, and/or programmatic functions. This experience includes work such as an Office Assistant 2 with the State of Alaska, or the equivalent elsewhere.

Substitution: 
Postsecondary education from an accredited college may substitute for the required experience (3 semester or 4 quarter hours equal one month of experience).
