Job Responsibilities
- Follow direction of field supervisors (Field Director, Crew Chief, and/or Assistant Crew Chief) in support of the research design and project execution;
- Conduct fieldwork according to state and Federal historic preservation guidelines/standards for reconnaissance surveys, terrestrial surveys augmented by shovel testing, and site documentation and recordation;
- Perform overland navigation using a compass, electronic maps, aerial imagery, and/or USGS topographic quadrangles
- Complete and submit requisite field paperwork: transect shovel test forms; draft feature profiles, perform photodocumentation and complete photo logs, etc.;
- Perform data collection using tablets with ArcGIS Collector or Field Maps.
- Communicate any issue (safety, injury, heat stress, etc.) to crew chief to facilitate timely resolution;
- Execute the goals of the project based on research design objectives and applicable standards of investigation safely and effectively;
- Other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Requirements
- Minimum of bachelorβs degree from an accredited institution in anthropology, archeology, or closely related field;
- Minimum attendance of at least one academic field school and/or one full year documented experience in CRM or archeological experience;
- Familiarity with state requirements for field surveys and/or monitoring.
- Familiarity with ArcGIS Collector or Field Maps, OR ability to learn how to operate effectively.
- Ability to effectively and respectfully communicate with field supervisors and fellow crew members;
- Ability to accurately record field data with minimum assistance from other employees. Must utilize effective time management;
- Ability to travel and conduct daily fieldwork for extended periods (crew typically works 10-hour days for duration of field effort, with exception of travel days);
- Ability to conduct fieldwork in inclement weather (cold, heat, humidity, light rain or snow etc.);
- Ability to work through rugged terrain and shovel test at prescribed intervals up to 10 miles a day while carrying appropriate field equipment weighing up to 40 lbs.;
- CPR, First Aid, First Aid for Wilderness Professionals certification preferred;
- Possess a valid driverβs license and have access to reliable transportation;
- Must pass a drug screening test upon employment.
