Job Summary
We are seeking qualified applicants for an Environmental Scientist position in Columbus, OH.
The Environment Division within the Environment and Agriculture Business Line conducts research, characterization, and remediation of environmental contamination, and designs and implements environmentally sustainable remedial technologies.
The selected candidate will support complex and innovative environmental characterization projects including terrestrial soil and groundwater, marine and freshwater sediments, water, biota, and other environmental media. Work will be conducted for our government or private sector clients.
Responsibilities
- Responsible for participating in physical field sampling activities throughout the United States.
- Responsible for conducting environmental field activities (e.g., collect environmental samples, oversee subcontractors, enforce health and safety procedures) to investigate contamination in soil, groundwater, surface water, sediment, soil gas, and air.
- Thoroughly identify and acquire all materials, equipment, and other resources to effectively implement the required field scope of work at the project site.
- Communicate and coordinate field activities with field teams (made up of Battelle staff and subcontractors), project managers, and client representatives.
- Maintain accountability for all on-site activities, including but not limited to staff health and safety, field records, sample custody, and safety observations.
- Follow procedures to conduct a variety of field activities, and document technical data.
- Collect, record, and manage field and sample data. Follow data quality requirements.
- Flexibility to work overtime, extended hours, and off-shifts as project needs arise.
- Flexibility to travel for extended periods (2-4+ weeks at a time) several times per year. This can include multiple, back-to-back deployments of several weeks each. This will primarily occur in the summer and fall but could occur during any season.
Key Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science, Biology, Ecology, Engineering, Geology, or a related field.
- Experience working in challenging environmental and physical conditions (heat, cold, wind, small boats, wading, carrying heavy loads, etc).
- Experience conducting field efforts.
- Excellent verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills.
- Excellent attention to detail and organizational skills.
- Ability to trouble-shoot mechanical and electrical problems with equipment that occur in the field.
- Ability to obtain 40-hour OSHA HAZWOPER and 8-hour annual refresher certification; adult cardiopulmonary resuscitation, standard first aid, and automated external defibrillator certification.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Strong computer skills and strong knowledge of Microsoft Office software including Word, Excel, and SharePoint.
- Must be able to travel. Travel is expected to be up to 25%.
- Must be a US Citizen or permanent resident.
Preferred Qualifications
- Direct and manage remediation contractors (including environmental investigations and remediation system construction)
- Experience with some or all of the following: soil, groundwater, surface water, sediment, indoor air, and soil-gas contamination investigation and remediation projects including techniques and equipment utilized on such projects (e.g., Horiba U-52 multi-parameter water quality meter, photoionzation detector, flowmeters, low flow sampling equipment, Summa canisters, solar powered free-product skimmers, etc.).
- Training: USACE Construction Quality Management
- Training: Current 40-hour OSHA HAZWOPER and current 8-hour annual refresher certification; current adult cardiopulmonary resuscitation, standard first aid, and automated external defibrillator certification; 8-hour OSHA supervisor certification; 30-hour OSHA construction safety certification or EM385-1-1 certification.
