Job Summary:
Under general supervision, provide enthusiastic and innovative instruction for groups and the public serving a broad range of audiences, and demonstrate dedication to a shared vision for the future of the education programs. The successful candidate will enhance existing programming through innovative, hands-on inquiry methods that encourage exploration and stewardship of sea turtles and the natural environment. Responsibilities include program development and assessment/analysis. The position includes weekend and holiday coverage, performing daily interpretive presentations, and providing supervision and support to part-time staff and volunteers.
Description of Duties:
- Coordinate select public, youth, and outreach programming and events (ex. Guided tours, Adopt-a-Sea Turtle program, guided beach walks, scout programming)
- Develop and implement field trip curriculum using performance measures, cross-cutting concepts, and imbedded evaluation.
- Interpret medical procedures, wildlife conservation strategies, and stewardship actions to a diversity of visitors from within all areas of the center.
- Spearhead specific programmatic and curriculum aspects of the department in conjunction with Education Program Manager; implement revisions, evaluations, and summary reports.
- Collaborate with contractors and internal teams for program, outreach, and event implementation.
- Provide direct support and supervision to seasonal staff, interns, and volunteers.
- Work with internal and external partners to identify curricular and workforce needs and implement identified improvements.
- Participate in departmental and center operations including guest experience, group reservations, and administrative/teaching/interpretive support.
- Oversee public programming and general admission traffic; coordinate with interpretive staff, volunteer docents, gift shop staff and reservations staff, ensuring quality guest experiences.
- Create and edit educational copy and assets such as email marketing materials, website content, online publications, and social media posts as assigned.
- Facilitate the recruitment, training, and quality involvement of volunteers in department in coordination with the Volunteer Program Manager.
- Performs multiple tasks simultaneously, calmly, and efficiently in a high-pressure setting.
- Uses independent judgment, personal experience, and training to ensure quality guest interactions and exceptional customer service according to policy.
- Assist in providing daily care of a collection of reptile educational ambassadors.
- Performs other duties as assigned by the department supervisor.
Qualifications:
- 18+ years of age
- Valid driver’s license
- CPR and First Aid certified or the ability to gain certification
- Flexible availability is required including weekends, holidays, evenings, and early mornings
- Occasional travel, including overnight, required
- Familiar with group management techniques and online teaching
- Excellent leadership and personnel management skills
- Team player with excellent interpersonal and written communication skills
- Self-motivated; ability to self-manage time to ensure that all primary responsibilities are met
- Experience in conducting programs for a diverse audience
- Experience maintaining effective working relationships with all levels of the organization
Educator I
- College degree or equivalent experience in a related field.
- Demonstrated experience teaching children in a classroom or professional informal learning setting.
- Demonstrated experience researching and developing education programming, preferably in an informal professional setting such as a nature center, park, zoo, aquarium, etc., including implementing best practices.
- Demonstrated experience using computer applications effectively, especially Word, Excel, Adobe Premiere Pro, Mailchimp, and Sprout Social.
- Demonstrated experience in frontline guest engagement, preferably in an informal setting such as a nature center, park, zoo, aquarium, etc.
- Demonstrated program, standards-based curriculum or event development & execution experience.
- Demonstrated experience supervising staff, interns, or volunteers.
Educator II
- Meets all Educator I credentials.
- Demonstrated experience evaluating education programs for outcome achievement.
- Demonstrated experience developing and implementing staff, intern and volunteer trainings.
- Demonstrated experience with editing copy and photography for publication.
- Demonstrated experience in budget assessment and establishing revenue goals.
- Active Certified Interpretive Guide and ability to maintain 10 CEU’s annually to maintain certification preferred.
- Project WET or Project WILD Certified Educator preferred.
- Experience in grant writing or support-based programming preferred.
Physical Requirements/Working Conditions:
- Exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
- More than 50% of the typical workday may be spent walking, sitting, standing and using repetitive motions of the wrists, hands or fingers.
- Between 25% and 50% of the typical work day may be spent climbing stairs, pushing and pulling.
- Less than 25% of the typical day is spent balancing, stooping and/or crouching, kneeling, reaching.
- Sensory abilities required include vision, touching and feeling with more than 50% of the day spent communicating including talking and hearing.
- Must have visual clarity for both close range work such as computer use and reading and distance such as operating motor vehicles and determining the accuracy, neatness, and thoroughness of work assigned.
- Work may be conducted within an indoor setting or outside with exposure to extreme heat, high humidity and occasionally adverse weather conditions.
- Between 20%-50% of typical work week may be spent in hot, humid conditions with exposure to biting insects.
- Will be exposed to hazards such as moving mechanical parts and moving vehicles.
- Noise levels are generally considered normal.
- This position provides on-the-job training.
