Summary

The Director of Communications will be responsible for leading, driving, and executing a communications vision and strategy to deliver a compelling and consistent brand narrative for Carhartt.  This role is accountable for devising a holistic communications plan that impacts our 6,000+ associates while enhancing our brand reputation as a premium workwear leader. 

This position inspires a team to generate breakthrough brand stories engaging new audiences; national, regional, local-consumer-led, industry, and business media. This position is critical to strengthen our connections with our associates, our core consumer, and to diversify our audience through the lens of building a better world with all hard-working people.

Responsibilities
  • Coach, mentor and develop team of direct reports.  
  • Develop and manage media relations, communications strategy, plans, goals, and budget.  
  • Works directly with Carhartt Senior leadership for internal and external communications to develop messaging that connects, motivates, and defines the voice of our brand and leaders. 
  • Develops high-quality written materials that convey Carhartt’s corporate narrative, including messaging platforms, press releases, Q&As, speeches, editorials, infographics etc. 
  • In partnership with the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion team, is the thought leader on internal/external communications to inspire our associates and help guide productive conversations on this subject 
  • Leads a cross-functional effort with Brand and HR to develop and execute internal communication campaigns to engage our multi-dimensional associate community 
  • Oversee communications for the Crisis Management Team (CMT), articulating the issue, providing transparency to leadership, and developing a turn-key solution (internal/external) to inform our associates (at times-consumer, partners, suppliers, accounts) in a timely manner. 
  • Provides consistent and timely communications to associates across various communications platforms. 
  • Ability to transfer and ideate relevant communication methods to positively reach and impact a remote workforce. 
  • Develops in partnership with PR agency, media relations strategy, ensuring high-level placements in print, broadcast, and online media effectively reaching new audiences   
  • Directs seasonal/yearly PR plans in coordination with the Go To Market process to extend the brand and product proposition to influence and inspire media and consumers to consider Carhartt 
  • Plans and executes PR campaigns 

Education
  • Bachelor's Degree Required in Communication or Related Field

Required Skills and Experience
  • 7-10 years’ experience of in-house Corporate/Internal communications and Public Relations experience or equivalent agency knowledge 
  • Experience working with high profile consumer brand is preferred. 
  • Excellent communications planning, writing and editing skills combined with speed, flexibility, and attention to detail. 
  • Proven ability to communicate plans across a global matrix organization; corporate, manufacturing, stores. 
  • Experience in corporate communications and public relations roles supporting globally branded organizations 
  • Strong multi-faceted PR, and media relations background. 
  • Extensive experience in employee communications preferred with a focus on digital and ability to translate message to non-computer users; manufacturing facilities, store, and distribution center associates. 
  • Ability to cut through complexity to find solutions and approaches for impact. 
  • Strong networking and relationship building skills; ability to influence others to take action
