ERM is seeking a motivated Consultant, Environmental Scientist/Permitting Specialist to join our global consulting firm Capital Project Delivery team in the Mid-Atlantic Region in our Ewing, New Jersey location.

The ideal candidate will have strong technical writing and communication skills and demonstrated experience with environmental siting and impact assessments under the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) and preparation of associated documentation, as well as experience preparing and obtaining multi-media federal, state, and local environmental permits. This position will focus on providing NEPA analysis and environmental permitting support for renewable energy, electric transmission and distribution projects, offshore work, and oil and gas pipeline projects. Additional experience supporting field-based protected species assessments, conducting wetland delineations, and managing data is also desired. 

Projects are often fast-paced, multi-faceted, and geographically diverse.  In this role, you will work closely with ERM Project Managers and Partners on a variety of environmental permitting, due diligence, and impact assessment projects to support our renewable energy, oil and gas, power, and technology sector clients. This is primarily an office-based role, with the opportunity to also support ecological field work as needed, and presents an exciting opportunity to build impact assessment and environmental permitting expertise across the East Coast.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provide technical assistance on a wide range of capital infrastructure and other projects, including preparation of environmental assessments and environmental impact statements under NEPA, habitat assessments, wetland delineations and reports, and other related environmental documents.

  • Prepare permit applications and compliance documentation with an emphasis on U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Section 404/Section 10, and state-level wetland and waterbody permitting (Pennsylvania, Maryland, New Jersey and Virginia experience preferred).

  • Coordination and consultation with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, National Marine Fisheries Service, and various state and local agencies regarding protected species.

  • Conduct tasks related to environmental assessments that include but are not limited to land use planning/facility siting, pipeline and/or transmission line routing studies, renewable energy desktop and field-based environmental assessments and reporting, and development of permit matrices and risk assessments.

  • Perform project delivery activities such as conducting field surveys, collecting and organizing field survey data, performing research/ literature reviews, writing reports, and developing strategies and recommendations for clients.

  • Work within quality/budget/schedule expectations and scope-specific assignments and develop a basic understanding of project management responsibilities.

  • Support ERM Partners-in-Charge and Project Managers to deliver exceptional client value on projects.

  • Work as an integral part of the Impact Assessment team and support the goals of the team.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • BS in environmental science, biology, natural resources, or related discipline. Or the equivalency of 8+ years related experience in lieu of education.

  • At least 3+ years (5 years preferred) of relevant environmental experience or professional internships.

  • 3+ years of consulting experience with NEPA impact assessment and multi-media federal and state permitting.  Ecological field experience is desired.

  • Experience with the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) is a plus.

  • Effective written/verbal communication and organization/analytical skills.

  • Experience recording/writing detailed technical data and reports and building tables and spreadsheets (including tabulation and manipulation of data).

  • Strong commitment to safety.

  • Detail-oriented with excellent critical thinking and troubleshooting/problem-solving skills.

  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills, which includes being comfortable and effective at communicating technical knowledge and concepts to other staff, clients, regulatory agencies, and project stakeholders.

  • Ability to engage in multifaceted and dynamic situations and to collaborate with a team of experts to support work through the lifecycle of a project. 

  • Ability to multi-task, maintain flexibility, travel (up to 25% if needed during field season), and work independently with minimal supervision.

  • Demonstrated attributes to become a strong consultant: team player, eagerness to learn and grow, self-starter who takes initiative, versatile, and service-oriented mentality.

  • Highly organized with keen eye for detail, but with the ability to maintain the big picture.

  • High level proficiency in Microsoft Office programs.

  • Valid driver’s license and good driving record.

For the Consultant, Environmental Scientist/Permitting Specialist (Mid-Level) position, we anticipate the annual base pay of $65,113 – $78,278 (USD).  An employee’s pay position within this range will be based on several factors including, but not limited to, relevant education, qualifications, certifications, experience, skills, geographic location, performance, shift, travel requirements, sales or revenue-based metrics, and business or organizational needs.  We also may have instances where compensation may be outside of the range, based on the factors noted above.  This job is also eligible for an annual discretionary based performance bonus.
