What do you offer?


The Assistant Director of Outdoor Education and Camping is responsible for assisting with the overall portfolio of the camping branch, including supporting the Y Outdoor Centre and Camp Otonabee.


In this position, the successful candidate is expected to live onsite at the facility in YMCA provided private accommodations.


Some of the tasks of this position include:



  • Assisting with the development of new solutions to deal with new problems.

  • Coaching, motivating and mentoring seasonal camp team.

  • Assisting in the coordination of camp logistics.

  • Assisting with hiring of seasonal staff, including interviewing, selection, and training.

  • Managing difficult situations or phone calls.

The successful candidate will have the following:


Education



  • Post-secondary degree in business, recreation, human kinetics, or social services would be an asset


Language



  • Ability to work in English

  • Bilingualism is an asset


Experience, Skills and Abilities



  • A minimum of 2-3 years of related experience

  • A minimum of 2 years of supervisory experience

  • Experience and sensitivity in dealing with members of different cultural and racial backgrounds including visible and invisible dimensions of diversity

  • Ability to maintain calm demeanor in stressful situations

  • Ability to act as a positive role model for campers, staff and volunteers

  • Certification(s) in Challenge Course Facilitation, National Lifeguard Service, Wilderness First Aid, Paddle Canada, Challenge Course Practitioner Level 2 and membership in related associations will all be considered assets

  • Proficient in Microsoft Word and Excel



    Additional Requirements



    • Applicants must be 18 years old at the start of employment. 

    • Applicants must be willing to live onsite at the facility in YMCA-provided private accommodations.

    • Applicants must be flexible to workdays, evenings and weekends. The incumbent will work Wednesday-Sunday from September to June, and Monday-Friday during the months of July and August. 

    • Applicants must have a current Standard First Aid and CPR "C" certification.

    • Applicants must already have a valid permit to work in Canada.

    • A Police Record check, not more than 6 months old is required. Police Records checks are reviewed on an individual basis and the offense(s) - if any - is considered in the decision-making process in relation to the requirement of working with children, therefore not eliminating all candidates with a record from being offered a position.

    • Semi-annually, staff must complete the mandatory training for the protection of Children & Youth and submit the certificate of completion.
