Job Purpose
Serve as senior staff member at the Black Island Transmission Facility. Responsible for all aspects of the daily operation, maintenance and management of facility in accordance with the Standard Operating Procedures outlined for the BITF.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Coordinate, manage and direct all aspects of the day-to-day operations, including safety orientation for all residing and visiting personnel.
- Coordinate all personnel travel to and from Black Island and manages sleeping arrangements for overnight visiting personnel.
- Direct the efforts of all Black Island staff, visiting trade personnel and distinguished visitors.
- Act as IT&C's first responder to all Satellite Communications, generator, alternative energy, AFRTS television, and HF Radio systems issues and minor maintenance.
- Coordinate helicopter hours with McMurdo Communications Supervisor
- Responsibilities can include; coordination of helicopter support, coordination of traverse efforts, supervision of employees, communications, weather observation, cargo movement, waste management, inventory management, resupply requests and coordination facility construction.
- Conduct all operations in accordance with the Standard Operating Procedures specific to the BITF location.
- Serve as safety coordinator, and ensures that all safety related rules and regulations are adhered to by all hands. Completes the first step of the SHIELD report on all job related injuries, communicates incidents to IT&C Manager within 48 hours and returns it to the EH&S department after each incident.
- Ensure the BITF facilities and equipment are maintained and operated safely, that the facility is tidy, and that waste is retrograded throughout the season. Responsible for all hazardous cargo identification, labeling, and handling prior to shipping back to McMurdo Station.
- Assist with the seasonal planning of projects, visiting distinguished visitors, and coordination of maintenance support personnel visits during the off-season.
- Supervise BITF staff and completes end of season evaluations on personnel.
- Operate heavy equipment for the purpose of various facility support purposes.
- Maintain a usable condition of the BI transitions and roadways.
- Maintain detailed records including fuel figures, camp population statistics, flight hours, weather observations, medical and communications.
- Complete end of season report according to SOP.
- Implement USAP's safety, environmental and health programs.
- Interact with National Science Foundation, military and other agency officials, both over the telephone and in person.
- All other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- U.S. citizenship or permanent residence is required.
- Bachelor degree is required. Relevant equivalent experience accepted in lieu of degree.
- Wilderness First Responder Certification preferred.
- A minimum of two years of supervisory experience is required.
- Must have an additional two years of experience in any combination of the following: weather reporting, equipment operation, cargo movement, fuel operations, and/or logistics.
- Demonstrated ability to work in remote and isolated environments is required. Good verbal communication skills, computer literacy, and problem solving skills required.
- One season of experience working in Arctic/Antarctica with direct experience working in a polar field camp is preferred.
- A basic knowledge of mountaineering skills is preferred.

Physical requirements
- Deployment will be required in this position. The individual in the position must successfully complete the physical and dental examinations as required by the NSF for deploying to Antarctica. Failure to meet these requirements may result in withdrawal of employment offer or other employment action.
- Individual must be capable of operating a standard desktop computer; must be able to lift and carry up to 10 pounds.

Position Expectations

- All expenses paid while on-ice; meals, lodging, medical, gear, travel to and from Antarctica.
