The Department of Conservation, Bureau of Parks and Lands, is seeking to fill the position of Allagash Park Ranger II (Chief Ranger).


 


BRIEF JOB DESCRIPTION: This position manages and supervises the operations, maintenance, and staff of the Allagash Wilderness Waterway (AWW), a remote park located deep in the heart of Maine’s North Maine Woods; stretching out over 92 miles from Telos Dam to East Twin Brook Campsite on the Allagash River. It has year-round activities including canoeing, camping, fishing, hiking, swimming, picnicking, boating, snowmobiling, and cross-country skiing. This position may be assigned other responsibilities in collaboration with additional State Park regions.


Housing: There is an expectation that the position occupies provided housing when it is available.


Responsibilities include: The position promotes the Superintendent’s goals and assists in planning and organizing long-term operational activities in the AWW. The Chief Ranger hires, supervises, and trains staff and selects volunteers. The Chief Ranger provides information to visitors about safety and protecting the waterway and natural wildlife habitat. Work requires implementation, enforcement, and compliance with agency policies, procedures and practices. Work is assigned to staff in multiple geographic areas and the Chief Ranger performs under the limited supervision of the Superintendent.


Representative Tasks include:



  • The position inspects and maintains waterway facilities to ensure the safety and well-being of visitors and the protection of artifacts in the AWW.

  • Implements prescribed policies and procedures concerning waterway operations and maintenance to ensure proper utilization of waterway facilities and recreational areas.

  • Meets and advises the public of Department/AWW policies, rules and regulations. The Chief Ranger cautions the public about potential hazards including rapids, high winds, cold water, and wildlife. The position relates abilities and equipment needed for the public to safely negotiate and use the waterway and facilities. 

  • Aids and supervises rescues to provide safe experience and reduce injury for AWW users. 

  • Reviews timber harvest approval/notification forms submitted by landowners and recommends appropriate actions to AWW Superintendent. 

  • Oversees operation and maintenance of AWW dams, ranger stations, radio and GPS technology and all solar or generator power systems. 

  • Provides information to the public about protection of the waterway to enhance public understanding of maintaining the natural environment in a responsible manner. 

  • The Chief Ranger represents the waterway to educate the public about the unique purpose of the Allagash Wilderness Waterway.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: A four (4) year combination of experience and/or education in park operations and maintenance -OR- work experience in a related field such as natural resource management.
