Camp Counselor Job Description 2025 

Position Overview: 
Camp Counselors are integral to the Wild Rivers Junior Lifeguard experience. Each counselor supervises a group of campers, leads songs, participates in activities, teaches CPR & basic lifeguard skills, plays games, rides the slides and manages day-to-day programming for our weekly sessions. The goal is to ensure campers have an enjoyable and educational experience. 

Primary Responsibilities
  • Camp Counselor hours
    • Camp - Mondays, 7:00am-1:30pm and Tuesday-Friday, 7:30am-1:30pm.  Must be a morning person and ready to engage and interact with team and campers upon arrival. 
  • Camp Counselor hours
    • Extended care - Monday-Friday 12-5:15pm 
  • Check kids into Camp and out of Camp using iPads and PIN numbers assigned to each parent/guardian.   
  • Carry a walkie talkie throughout the day: ensuring ongoing communication with the camp manager, lead, other counselors and camp assistants. 
  • Create a Positive Environment: Maintain a welcoming atmosphere for all campers.
  • Lead Activities: Facilitate and execute all planned skills sessions and activities for assigned camper groups daily.  This includes CPR and Basic 1st Aid. 
  • Assist in Managing Operations: Interact in various aspects of camp operations, including food service, maintenance, registration, and parent/camper relations. 
  • Ensure Safety: Maintain safety standards and enforce rules to ensure camper well-being.  This includes applying sunscreen. 
  • Supervise Activities: Monitor activities to ensure they are safe and organized. 
  • Set Up Equipment: Prepare and maintain equipment used for the Junior Guard Camp. 
  • Initiate Movement and be Creative: Keep the campers busy, engaged, and excited to spend their day at Wild Rivers.  
  • Play in the park: Alongside the kids, ride the slides, get your hair wet and play.  When appropriate create opportunities for your campers that are thrill seeker or timid to join up with other groups during “playing in the park”. 
Primary Responsibilities for Extended Care “Stay and Play” 
  • Supervise and ride slides with campers while playing in the park. 
  • Reapply sunscreen and keep campers hydrated. 
  • Provide supervision during all activities, whether during snack time, quiet time in camp, while playing in park, trips to 1st Aid & bathroom, etc. 
  • Check kids out of Camp and into Extended Care. Also keep a headcount on the kids not enrolled in extended stay. 
    • ​Use iPad and authorized PIN to check kids out 
  • Carry a walkie talkie throughout camp 
  • One person, typically a Camp Assistant, is to stay in camp at all times 
Qualifications: 
  • Experience: Must have experience working with children. 
  • Reliability: Must be patient and reliable, with punctual daily attendance. 
  • Skills: Strong leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills are essential. 
  • Certification: Must have or be able to obtain a StarGuard lifeguarding certification. 
  • Flexibility: Willingness to work lifeguard shifts as needed. 
  • Physical Requirements: Ability to stand and walk for long periods and regularly move up to twenty pounds. 
  • Enthusiasm: Willingness to sing, dance, go down water slides, get hair wet, jump into the water, and interact/play with campers daily. 
  • Background Check: Applicants over 18 must pass a standard background check. 
  • Device Policy: Camp is a no-device zone; counselors are not permitted to use devices during camp hours, except during the 30-minute lunch break. 
  • Lunch Break: Counselors are required to take a 30- minute lunch break.  Lunch will not be provided, either pack lunch or purchase a meal at an employ discount. Water refill stations are available. 
Enrollment in camp varies by week, full-time summer employment is not guaranteed.  On weeks camp has lower enrollment, camp counselors will be asked to work lifeguard shifts.
