    Job Description

THE THEODORE ROOSEVELT PRESIDENTIAL LIBRARY FOUNDATION

“Believe you can, and you’re halfway there.” -Theodore Roosevelt

Since 2014, the Theodore Roosevelt Presidential Library Foundation (TRPLF) has been planning and building a new, ambitious kind of presidential library and museum. Other presidential libraries tell the story of a single individual, but the Theodore Roosevelt Presidential Library (TRPL) – being built more than a century after T.R.’s death – will do more than preserve history. The TRPL will be a people’s library, bringing Roosevelt’s values and relentless spirit to life at a critical time in our nation and world, while simultaneously championing the stories of all who “dare greatly, think boldly, care deeply, and live passionately.”

The library is currently being constructed in Medora, North Dakota, with a milestone planned for July 4, 2026 – America’s 250th anniversary. Participants at the TRPL will learn from – not just about – Roosevelt’s story, being transformed into the same stunning Badlands that served as the fulcrum in T.R.’s incredible life story.

    • Guided by the pillar principles of leadership, citizenship, and conservation, the Foundation has partnered with innovative partners – like the award-winning architecture firm, Snøhetta, and the best-in-class story crafters, the Future of Storytelling – to build an institution like no other. With plans to be the most sustainable presidential library and campus ever, a revolutionary approach to interpretive design, and programming that will spread the library’s message into neighboring Theodore Roosevelt National Park and beyond across the globe, the opportunity to join a talented team in building and opening this institution is truly unique.

    About the Role:

The Facilities Engineer will be the steward of one of the most advanced, sustainable, and innovative buildings in the world. This role is for someone who thrives at the intersection of technology, conservation, and craftsmanship. A leader who can keep complex systems running flawlessly while advancing our mission to achieve zero energy, zero carbon, zero water, and zero waste.

You will lead predictive and preventative maintenance programs, oversee high-performance building systems including HVAC, MEP, geothermal, solar, and onsite wastewater treatment, while ensuring everything operates at peak efficiency. Every choice you make will help Theodore Roosevelt Presidential Library demonstrate to the world what is possible when engineering meets environmental stewardship. Reporting to the Director of Facilities, Grounds, and Sustainability, you will help shape the operational heartbeat of a landmark cultural institution.

    Core Competencies

    • Passion for sustainability, conservation, and innovation in building operations.
    • Expertise in commercial building systems including HVAC, electrical, plumbing, mechanical, geothermal, solar, and water treatment.
    • Experience with predictive and preventative maintenance programs, computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS), and performance monitoring.
    • Familiarity with or eagerness to learn LEED, SITES, and Living Building Challenge (LBC) requirements.
    • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to lead, train, and inspire a team.
    • Experience leading maintenance teams, contractors, and vendors with a focus on operational excellence, safety, and environmental responsibility.
    • Strong problem-solving, communication, and leadership skills.

    Responsibilities:

    • Operational Excellence
    • Lead day-to-day operation and optimization of all building systems to ensure safety, reliability, and efficiency.
    • Implement and manage predictive and preventative maintenance programs to maximize system life and performance.
    • Monitor building performance data and adjust systems to maintain optimal comfort and sustainability targets.
    • Innovation & Sustainability
    • Monitor, troubleshoot, and optimize the Building Automation System (BAS) to ensure efficient operation of HVAC, lighting, and other integrated systems, maintaining optimal building performance and occupant comfort.
    • Operate and fine-tune renewable energy systems including geothermal and solar arrays.
    • Manage onsite water systems, including wastewater treatment.
    • Work with the sustainability team to track and improve performance toward LEED Platinum, SITES Platinum, and LBC Full Living goals.
    • Leadership & Team Development
    • Supervise engineering staff, contractors, and service vendors.
    • Provide hands-on training in advanced systems and sustainable operations.
    • Foster a culture of pride, safety, and care for the building as a living system.
    • Safety & Compliance
    • Ensure all building systems comply with safety codes, environmental regulations, and certification standards.
    • Maintain life safety systems and emergency power readiness.
    • Keep detailed maintenance and performance records.
    • Perform other duties as assigned.

    Education and Experience:

    • An engineering degree combined with engineering-level duties or a professional engineering (PE) license preferred.
    • Minimum 5 years of experience in building operations or engineering, with 2 or more years in a leadership role required.
    • Experience with renewable energy, advanced HVAC controls, and water treatment/reuse systems strongly preferred.
    • Experience with OSHA compliance & regulations, maintaining a safe work environment through regular inspections, hazard mitigation, and safety training preferred.

    Physical and Environmental Requirements

    • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and work in diverse indoor and outdoor conditions.

    • Available for after-hours emergencies and occasional weekend or holiday work.
    • Must be able to distinguish between wire and component colors when performing electrical maintenance and troubleshooting.
    • This is a full-time, exempt position working onsite at the TRPL in Medora, ND.
