Position Summary
The National Parks Service is currently recruiting one Student Conservation Association member to work within the Natural Resources Program at Big Hole National Battlefield. The individual will support Natural Resource program work through a field-oriented position with potential for some office work, as
needed. The member will have the opportunity to gain skills associated with conservation work, natural resource management work, and understanding the National Park Service mission. Work will be primarily within the vegetation program focused on vegetation management, conducting a variety of tasks from
invasive species control to vegetation monitoring and restoration, to promote ecosystem health. Members will get the opportunity to assist with the tasks associated with this work, as well as have opportunities to experience and
- assist other park projects within the Cultural Resources, Interpretation, and
Facilities programs. Daily tasks will consist of assisting Natural Resource program staff with various field work and will be based out of the Big Hole National Battlefield.
Location
Wisdom, MT
Member will be based out of Big Hole NB. They will start each day at the duty location and may travel. Days will end at the duty station.

Key Duties and Responsibilities
Vegetation Management 95%
Work in a team or independently to treat invasive plants at Big Hole NB.
· Survey, identify, map exotic vegetation.
· Treat exotic vegetation through hand-pulling, cutting, or herbicide application.
· Document treatments and update files and GIS layers Maintain equipment.
· Work in a team to monitor vegetation and specific plant species (camas, penstemon, Spalding’s catchfly)
· Survey, identify, map native vegetation.
· Maintain equipment.
· Document and update files
Restoration
· Spread native seed mixes in disturbed areas.
· Seed collection
· Plant seedlings in disturbed areas
Other duties
· Preparing information (print and/or oral) for sharing with public and co-workers about project work at Nez Perce National Historical Park
· Enter data
· Document resource findings/activities
· Work with other park programs as needed
Marginal Duties
Some overnight travel may occur to Nez Perce National Historical Park (Lapwai, ID), Bear Paw Battlefield (Chinook MT), and/or Whitman Mission National Historic Site (Walla Walla, WA), as needed and if interested. Member will assist with other programs as needed such as the Cultural Resources, Interpretation, and
Facilities programs.
Required Qualifications:
· Ability to work outdoors in remote settings and inclement weather on uneven ground.
· Willingness to work as a part of a team and/or independently in an outdoor setting.
· Willingness to carry and work with and near herbicides.
· Reliable Strong focus on attention to detail
· Good written and verbal communication skills
· A positive attitude and willingness to learn.
· Driver's License Personal vehicle required.
· Physically fit enough to carry a ~30 lb. backpack.
This SCA Position is authorized under the Public Land Corps Authority. All participants must be between the ages of 16 and 30, inclusive, or veterans age 35 or younger. Participants must also be a citizen or national of the United States or lawful permanent resident alien of the United States. Hours served can
be applied toward the Public Land Corps (PLC) hiring authority.
Preferred Qualifications:
· Knowledge of Northwest natural resources and plants
· Coursework in biology, botany, natural resources, and a strong interest in conservation
· Previous experience using GPS units.
· Experience with basic land navigation equipment and/or methods
· Experience in presenting informational or educational talks to the public.
· Experience teaching and/or leading youth, conservation, reforestation and/or outdoor recreation skills

40 per week
Living Accommodations
Housing will be provided on site. Shared housing may be required.
Compensation:
· $1,100- one time RT travel allowance
· $800 - weekly living allowance
· Duty Related Travel Budget of $5,000 (Receipts required for reimbursement)
· Housing on site provided
· All Weather Uniform Package

All allowances are subject to applicable federal, state, and local taxes.
