Job Description
The Seasonal Forestry Maintenance Preprofessional position supports forestry staff in the care and maintenance of trees, shrubs, and nursery stock throughout district preserves. It provide experience in arboriculture, native plant care, and land stewardship while providing training to complement technical education.
What You'll Do Safely operate and maintain landscaping tools and equipment such as mowers, trimmers, and other power and hand tools.
- Assist with planting, trimming, and removal of trees and shrubs.
- Support preserve and nursery maintenance, including arboricultural tasks, stream clearing, turf restoration, and general upkeep.
Operate tractors and implements such as loaders, mounted mowers, and roto-tillers.
- Help maintain and operate drip irrigation systems within the native plant nursery.
- Assist with identifying and controlling invasive plant species.
- Follow all safety procedures and maintain a clean, organized work environment.
- Provide excellent support to staff and the public as needed.
What You'll Need 18 years of age or older at time of hire. Currently pursuing or recently completed a degree in forestry, horticulture, or a related field. Valid Driver's License in good standing. One year of forestry or horticulture experience preferred. Ability to perform physically demanding tasks in outdoor environments.
Basic knowledge of forestry principles, tree and shrub identification, and ecological concepts. Proficiency in using basic forestry tools and equipment.
- Schedule & Pay
Monday through Friday. 6:45 am. - 2:45 pm. This position starts around April/May of 2026 and works for approximately 12 weeks. $18 - 20 per hour Work Setting Position is based out of the Grounds Management Office inside of Blackwell Forest Preserve and requires frequent travel to Forest Preserve sites across the district.
