Job Description
Overview Conservation Educators teach programs for schools, youth groups, families and adults. Conservation Educators will conduct a wide range of programs at our WildeCamp facility, Outpost, off-site, and at our Hellbender RV Campground. This position requires staff to work a flexible schedule, including working weekends and often staying overnight at The Wilds. All staff are required to drive a school bus during programs (training will be provided). On-site housing is available (for nominal fee).
Responsibilities:
- Support The Wilds in delivering unforgettable educational experiences that inspire conservation and connect people with nature.
Education & Interpretation:
Teach education programs to people of all ages Interpret the natural world and local history including animal behavior, conservation work, and restoration work
- Create fun and memorable opportunities for EVERY program participant
Program Operations & Logistics Attend training dates in late March
- Drive school bus on Wilds’ property (will train as needed)
Stay overnight at the Education Camp and Outpost with groups during programs Outdoor Activities & Facility Maintenance Supervise outdoor activities such as canoeing, archery, and hiking Clean and prepare Education Camp and Outpost for groups
- Perform maintenance tasks such as cleaning the shower house/restrooms, sweeping yurts, and maintaining the kitchen/dining area while ensuring high levels of food safety
- Maintain hiking trails and outdoor spaces at Education Camp
Community Engagement & Additional Support Represent The Wilds at promotional events and off-site programs
- Help with summer camp and teen program as needed
Other duties as assigned
Qualifications:
Education & Experience:
High school diploma or equivalent Minimum of two years of college-level coursework completed in related field (education, science, etc.) or equivalent experience preferred
Experience with school-age children:
Physical & Recreational Ability Comfortable in and on the water, able to hike long distances, and willing to supervise and participate in outdoor recreational activities Ability to work a flexible schedule including evenings, weekends, and holidays All staff will be required to occasionally spend the night at The Wilds
Safety & Compliance Ability to adhere to standard operating procedures including but not limited to safety protocols Possession of a state-issued motor vehicle operator’s license and a good driving record Must be willing to be trained to drive school bus while on Wilds’ property Ability to successfully complete a criminal history background check annually
Current First Aid and CPR certification (training will be offered) Current Lifeguard Certification is optional and compensated at $15/hr during swimming/canoeing Communication & Guest Service Ability to maintain a positive attitude in sometimes stressful situations Ability to communicate well both verbally and in writing
Ability to provide excellent guest service by positively interacting with guests Familiarity with Ohio wildlife and native plants, preferred
